LeBron James set a really bad precedent with his celebrity basketball “Which team will I go to” press conference (brought to you in stunning Hi-Def by ESPN). While sports fans everywhere can appreciate that LeBron James is a dynamic and amazing athlete whose prowess will be heralded by any team which ends up with him, there seems to be something of a disconnect between what people should be expecting of their athletes and what people are getting. People want (and deserve) athletes who hold themselves in positive light, who play the game and play it well, and who are good role models for the fans and for the children who want to grow up and emulate them. What people got with that LeBron James spectacular is more corporate advertising, product placement, and brands stuffed down their throats.
LeBron James Miami Heat Selection: What Went Down: So this event; heralded “The Decision,” was a little silly. On the one hand, you say, LeBron James did go to the Boys & Girls Club for this event. Still, it’s not even really an “event.” Right? I mean yes LeBron James is a great player; but which team he’s playing for should get out through the usual channels. The newspaper, the evening news, the Internet; I mean remember what the protocol is. And in other news; why the heck was this thing an hour?!? I mean, really? How hard was it for you to say, “I’m going to Miami?”
LeBron James Miami Heat Selection: What’s Next: While I get it that everyone is trying to make a buck, why with the press conference? LeBron James is a great player; he’s dynamic; he could play anywhere. Still, there was so much lead up to this thing and so much letdown on my end, that the whole thing just seems moot. LeBron James was a native of Ohio; Miami’s got Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade; having the three of them on one squad will be tremendous. Then when I found out there’s no income tax in Miami, I knew he’d have to go there. For curious folks like me who wonder about these things, I pondered all the other possibilities for future ‘press-conference-worthy’ events. Not even active players; the LeBron James press conference selection show leaves the door wide open for celebrities athletes and the criminally insane to do the same thing for any number of things in the future. Imagine; The Wall Street Journal and Lenny Dykstra Present: Nails Investments 2008 Picks for Stocks We Should Have Bought; Jimmy Dean Sausage and Gary Carter Present: What Little League Team Will I Coach? Doc Gooden and Red Bull Energy Drink Present: Doc’s Back on the Sauce 2010.
Of course these are all barbs at favorite athletes of mine, but now the hard work’s got to get done. Now LeBron James has to go to Miami and be prepared to dance at the Big Show. It remains to be seen whether or not LeBron James has got that much in him.
