When I was a kid, I had an aunt and uncle who would put water and ice in a bowl. They would sit it in front of a box fan to cool off the bedrooms in their homes because the small window air conditioner wouldn’t cool those rooms. This was their way of creating a different form of a homemade air conditioner.
I have done this a few times in a couple of houses we rented that we used a window air conditioner in. Thanks to my aunt and uncle, I had an alternative to cooling a room on warm days.
However, that version didn’t last long since the ice and water was sitting in an open container. The bowls would have to be dumped when they quit doing their job and we would have to start that process over every hour or so.
The two free tutorials listed below will probably work far better than the way I mentioned above. The reason being there is a larger amount of ice water and ways to keep it circulating closer to the fan blades than our version. In addition, there are larger amounts of ice water being used.
The best thing about these versions is you can use the water to water plants or gardens. Depending on how many plants or the size of your gardens, you may or may not use all the water.
If the kids are looking for a science experiment to do, this could be one for them to do with adult supervision of course. They could take pictures and write a report over the process of making a homemade air conditioner. They could write a second science report on how well the homemade air conditioner cooled a room or other small area in the house.
