The Frugal Nutrition Substituter found a new buy with the Lean Pocket creation of Garlic Chicken White Pizza. I spotted this item on sale at the Fareway grocery store in Fort Dodge, Iowa. It comes in a white and green box with the Lean Pocket logo and a delicious picture of 2 cooked lean pockets in an artful layout. There was also the words Culinary Creations in intersting print. The top of the box also emphasized that the crust was made with whole grain and each serving had 8 grams of fat, 260 calories, and 12 grams of protein. On the back of the box there was a little more information about the culinary creations line in general, and the Garlic Chicken White Pizza pockets in particular. This was displayed over the top of a variety of vegetables, probably to remind people how healthy their product is. This was also the area that I was able to locate the Nutrition Facts box. As a Frugal Nutrition Substituter I judge products on their price, their nutrition, and how easily I can substitute it for my family’s unhealthier food products.
These lean pockets fit the frugal bill. The sale was for 2 boxes for $5.00. Each box has 2 sandwiches inside. Each sandwich would only a $1.25. I consider this to be a very decent amount for the base of the meal.
I next looked at the nutrition facts. Each sandwich only had 260 calories, but 70 of the calories was from fat. The total fat was at 8 grams for 12 % of your daily recommended amount. The saturated fat was at 20%. Each serving had 25 mg of cholesterol and 540 mg of sodium. It also has 38 grams of carbohydrate with only 3 grams of dietary fiber. It does have 12 grams of protein in every serving, and meets 20% of you calcium needs. The best parts of this information was placed on the front cover. The higher cholesterol and the 20% calcium is probably due the the nice amount of cheese in this product. If you are on a low-fat diet this is not a product for you.
I then judged the taste. I like cheese with a bite, so I thought the Garlic White Chicken Pizza was delicious. However, I did not think that this tasted much like my usual pizza. The whole grain crust was very good, and held up reasonably well to being frozen and then microwaved (as per instructions). It did leak the sauce in one corner and was slightly chewier than I prefer in a crust. Inside the crust, the chicken breast and the cheesy garlic sauce were blended well combined and filled me up. I enjoyed the taste very much for a microwave meal.
I was slightly concerned about the fat and cholesterol amounts on this “Lean” meal. For everyday health I will try to find a healthier alternative, but when you need something convenient and fast this product is much better than many other microwaved meal options out there.
