The NY Daily News is reporting that Shockutainer Lady Gaga may have gone too far with her recent stage antics at Lollapalooza.
According to MTV Lady Gaga was scheduled to close out Friday night’s performance at Chicago’s Grant Park. A few hours before her final set Gaga, who was there early to watch her Monster Ball Tour opening band Semi Precious Weapons perform, became a part of the act. Clad in a fishnet body suit, gold star pasties and gold panties, Gaga joined the band onstage to drum and sing before jumping headlong into a sea of screaming fans.
Video of Gaga’s nearly naked crowd surfing shows fans excitedly grabbing Gaga’s breasts, thighs and buttocks and using cell phones to snap pictures and video.
Semi Precious Weapons Tells Their Side
Justin Tranter lead singer for Semi Precious Weapons recalled the incident. “She came to watch us perform. She stood on the side of the stage, and then during the song ‘Magnetic Baby,’ she started playing drums with Dan. Then she started singing backup vocals, then her and I made out, and then she stagedove and then I joined her while she stage-dove. And then we made out while stage diving. And then she left. It was pretty amazing.”
This was Gaga’s first trip to Lollapalooza since 2007. In that appearance Gaga played a few of her songs on a side stage. This time she was the headliner.
Gaga’s Antics Reminiscent of Madonna
Although shocking, Lady Gaga’s antics are hardly fresh and innovative. Madonna did the whole Lady Gaga thing decades ago, and much better. From making crucifixes into fashion accessories to making out with a “saint”, Madonna did it all. Madonna pushed the music, video, dress and performance envelopes that Lady Gaga now pushes even further. But it may all be too much.
Has Lady Gaga Finally Gone Too Far?
While concert goers were clearly delighted with Gaga, many others were not so amused with her antics. According to Entertainment Tonight parent groups including Family Circle magazine are speaking out against Lady Gaga’s performance. “Lady Gaga has become a cultural icon with fans of all ages, including young kids. Unfortunately in this case, she pushed the boundaries of acceptable behavior and many of her teen and tween fans had a front row seat to the show. Today’s kids are savvy and they know the difference between image and reality, but they’re still kids at heart, desperately seeking role models and ground rules to live by. As parents, we can’t sit on the sidelines; it’s our job to counteract the messages that equate cool and sexy with public nudity and random hook ups.”
The Catholic League Responds to Gaga’s Performance
The Catholic League also issued a statement about Gaga’s nearly naked crowd surfing. “If a young gal on Spring Break did what Lady Gaga did–throwing herself half-naked into a crowd of crazies–we’d say she was a drunken fool (and God only knows what would happen to her after that). But when Lady Gaga does it, somehow it’s considered artistic.”
Controversy is Lady Gaga’s thing, be it her sexually charged music, explicit videos or outrageous outfits. Gaga’s Lollapalooza performance may just push her over the top and win her most of the 13 MTV Video Music awards she’s up for this year. Or, it may just push some to denounce her even more.
