Kurt Cobain of Nirvana: History and Downfall

by itchyfish

Kurt Cobain is noted in history as the founder, lead singer, and guitarist of the popular 90s band Nirvana. His huge hits such as “Smells like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are” and “Heart Shaped Box” cemented his band into the history books for their influential sound and style. Unfortunately for the world, Cobain died a premature death.

Born in Aberdeed, Washington, Cobain grew up as a hyperactive youngster on Ritalin to help him concentrate in school and sedatives to help him sleep at night. His parents divorced when he was seven and young Cobain was such a difficult child that his parents sent him away to be raised by relatives. Always with a dislike for school, Cobain spent much of his time listening to The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, and the Monkees. This bands later influenced his unique style of music. He got his first guitar at the age of 14 and began teaching himself how to play it. He dropped out of school just before graduating but had trouble keeping a job.

In 1986, Cobain formed Nirvana with Krist Novaselic on bass guitar and various drummers. They released their first album in 1989, called Bleach. Their second single was unsuccessful, but after changing record companies and joining with their permanent drummer, Dave Grohl, they released Nevermind, which received very positive reviews. They quickly reached huge popularity to the anxiety of Cobain, who preferred small club settings. He began, in the early 90s, to use heavy drugs such as heroin and morphine.

In 1992, his personal life seemed to be getting under control as he married his wife, Courtney Love, and they had a daughter, Francis Bean Cobain. The band released their next album, Incesticide. Just a year later in 1993, however, Cobain overdosed on heroin and was checked into a clinic. He left the clinic before his rehab was done and the band played on. They released In Utero, their final album in 1993.

After a big concert in Munich in 1994, Cobain was hospitalized and in a drug-induced coma. After waking up and leaving by his own choice, he was reported missing for three days. He was found eventually in his house, dead by a self inflicted gunshot wound. Like so many other great rock stars and artists, Cobain chose to end his own life.

Despite his premature death, his music continued to rise in popularity until today, when it is still enjoyed by the young generation. Nirvana is accredited with inventing grunge rock, a form of punk rock that uses more sophisticated chords that make it more emotional. Today, artists still take inspiration from Kurt Cobain and learn a lesson about the dangers of a drug addicted lifestyle.
