According to a video report from MSNBC.com, killer Joren Van der Sloot, is receiving love letters and marriage proposals from women (and possibly some men) from all over the world. When I saw the video, it inspired me to do some research. Is there really such a phenomenon as “Inmate Groupies” or even “Killer Groupies? I said to myself, “No, this can’t be”, but it is!

There are women and men, too, that are attracted to people in prison and will contact them and often fall in love with them. Some have even married prisoners once they were released or even begin relationships with men on death row. I’m not sure I understand this phenomenon, but hey, whatever makes your boat float. Anything seems to go these days, but seeking out and falling in love with a convicted killer is a bit much.
I understand there is a shortage of good and available single men, but are things that bad? I’m aware that a lot of women are attracted to and turned on by bad-boy types, but a brutal, cold-blooded killer? I’m not sure how this is attractive, sexy or desireable.
I’m pretty sure that if a lot of woman saw Joren Van der Sloot walking down the street and didn’t know who he was or if he was an actual decent and sane single guy, they might think that he’s cute, but the fact is that he’s apparently a psychopath killer. This is husband or boyfriend material? What?
An article by Guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/jan/13/gender.uk) discusses the mind-set of these so-called “Killer Groupies”. According to the article, a German waitress fell in love with a murderer from North Carolina because she saw a picture of him and fell in love with him because he had remorseful and soulful eyes. This man had an IQ of 75, but she was determined that somehow he would be her man, got in touch with him, moved to America with his family and became engaged to him.
Even serial killers have been known to receive tons of love letters and marriage proposals from adoring women. Some women send photographs, sometimes explicit, to these men, making offers of love.
You might think these women are a few donuts short of a dozen, but according to the Guardian.co.uk article, there any all kinds of women that are into killer love and worship. One man in jail ended up engaged to his attorney. One would assume that if she graduated law school, passed the bar exam and was a practicing laywer, that she may not be a stupid woman intellectually, but perhaps something was awry in her head-space.
The internet is apparently full of websites for those that want to communicate with inmates and they are popular, containing pictures and profiles of incarcerated men and women. To each his or her own.
