When dining al fresco with kids, simplicity is key. Kid friendly picnic appetizers should be easy to eat. Finger foods work best. Pack more food than you think you will need since kids get hungrier when playing outdoors. I always avoid chocolate at all costs when planning a kid friendly picnic. Chocolate has a nasty habit of melting in warmer weather. Who needs that mess! To avoid food bourne illness, make sure all picnic food is kept on ice in a cooler until ready to serve. Here are some quick, easy and delicious recipes for kid friendly picnic appetizers.
Kid Friendly Picnic Appetizer Idea: Apple Pizzas
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Peanut butter or other nut butter
Toppings: raisins, coconut, mini M&M’s, chopped nuts, etc.
Mix lemon juice with water in a bowl. Set aside. Core apples and cut into slices about ½ inch thick. Place sliced apples in bowl of lemon water. The apples should be completely submerged. This will help keep the apple slices from getting brown. Soak sliced apples for a few minutes. Remove apple slices from lemon water, place on paper towels and blot dry. Spread peanut butter on one side of each apple slice. Dip apple, peanut butter covered side down into favorite toppings. Wrap in waxed paper.
