If you were one of the new viewers who tuned into “Real Housewives of New York City” Thursday evening, you saw something a bit outside the usual melodrama that encapsulates the lives of Kelly Bensimon, Bethenny Frankel, and the rest of the cast of the reality show. In fact, Kelly Bensimon’s behavior had many wondering if they were witnessing a psychotic break (read: she had a breakdown, went nuts, loco, around the bend, bats**t crazy) during the episode. Given the amount of attention Kelly Bensimon’s unusual behavior has received after the airing of the show, “wondering” might just be a nice way of saying “nearly convinced.” (The “nearly” qualifier must be used because one can never tell with these drama queens if they’re actually crazy or simply posturing for the cameras.) What did Kelly Bensimon do that caused the internet to burn with talk of the “Real Housewives of New York City” star having a breakdown?
The show started off with everyone attending Ramona Singer’s “non-bachelorette party,’ and remained civil until Kelly Bensimon reminded everybody that Bethenny Frankel was not a chef, but a cook (chefs work in restaurants, she pointed out). The pregnant Bethenny, famous as a natural foods cook, let her emotions get the better of her, burst into tears and exited the room. Of course, that was simply mean-spirited on Bensimon’s part, but the crazy train had left the station, and…
The next day Bethenny Frankel gave all the housewives a gift bag (which included items from her very own Skinny Girl line) and Kelly Bensimon literally began freaking out. She said she was scared and that Bethenny was trying to kill her. She phones Jill Zarin, who was still in New York City, to stay clear of Bethenny.
Then Bensimon later walks into the room full of the Housewives and tells them that if they have a complaint about her, they should write it down and put it in a box. She even supplied the notepad. Then the former Playboy model proceeded to rudely talk during dinner (which Bethenny, the “cook,” prepared) on her cell phone, which Ramona labeled as rude.
But Bethenny Frankel didn’t passively take all of the abuse dished her way, yelling at one point, “Go to sleep! You’re crazy!”
Kelly would also tell Alex McCord that she was channeling the devil (but she was still beautiful!). She kept saying that Bethenny Frankel was trying to kill her throughout the episode. The show ended with Ramona Singer stroking Kelly Bensimon’s hair in an attempt to get her to calm down.
Crazy or staged? A breakdown or just an act for the cameras? Who really knows?
Teresa Giudice, star of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” and blogging for Bravo after the show, noted that the episode was “insane” and “scary to watch.” She noted that she believed that Kelly Bensimon was more “real” than the other housewives, “But her reality is kind of scary, huh?” Giudice said it was the “most disturbing episode of reality TV I’ve ever watched in my life.”
Psychologically speaking, if Kelly Bensimon — author, Playboy model, designer, editor, and reality show castmember — had indeed begun to fear for her life without reason, she may have been exhibiting symptoms of a mental breakdown, or psychotic break. These sometimes occur when an individual becomes delusional. Eratic and unreasonable behavior, at times accompanied by outlandish or unsubstantiated beliefs or feelings of fear and paranoia, are brought on by any number of things, including stressors, which Bensimon’s hectic life certainly contains aplenty. Given her accusations that Bethenny Frankel was attempting to kill her and that Alex McCord was channeling the devil, Bensimon might want to seriously consider making an appointment with a psychiatrist — or two.
Of course, if it was simply an act for “The Real Housewives of New York City”…
