Keeping Hair Curly in Heat and Humidity

by itchyfish

Ahh, warm weather. That beautiful time of year known as swimsuit season, when it’s perfectly natural to wear what you want when you want. While the endless heat helps to create excellent conditions for beach parties and last minute cookouts, it can be quite obnoxious when it comes to attempting to tame your curly locks.

Heat and humidity, combined with the sun’s damaging rays, often produce out-of-control frizz and fly-aways, leaving curly hair a frumpy, misshapen mess. Fortunately for those of us with kinky manes, the right advice goes a long way in keeping hair curly in heat and humidity.

Condition, Condition, Condition

Frizz is created when moisture comes in contact with dry and brittle strands of hair. To keep your curls at their tightest, use conditioner each and every day. Conditioner not only restores moisture levels and repairs damage, but many brands help to add much-needed weight to curls, which aids in preventing frizz caused by the elements.

Smooth with Serums

A variety of smoothing serums exist that promise to control frizz on all hair types. Rather than taking a gamble on a product with somewhat vague promises, find a smoothing serum created specifically to treat frizz and fly-aways in curly hair during the humid months.

Ditch the Dryer and Heated Tools

Even occasional use of blow dryers and heated styling tools such as ceramic straightening irons and traditional curling irons causes breakage and dryness, thus leading to dreaded frizz and limp locks. Ditch the dryer and other heated tools and allow your curls to air-dry. For many, applying the right frizz-control products to damp hair and allowing hair to air dry is all that’s necessary to keep their curls tight in the heat.

Try Wax and Cream Products

From traditional oil-based styling products to the newest waxes and creams, the curly-haired gal need not worry about a lack of products to smooth her curly hair while retaining style in the steamy heat. There are many wax- and cream-based styling products that are designed to control frizz while holding shape. Search for a product that meets the most specific of your hair needs – maintaining color, smoothing texture, adding shine, etc. – and you will likely find it in a wax or cream form.

Protect Your Curls

Did you know that the sun’s harmful rays can cause split ends, frizz and even washed-out color? Prevent future damage to your locks and protect your hair from the damaging effects of the sun, heat and humidity by investing in a product designed to prevent damage while protecting your curls.
