Breaking News- The youth of America DO have talent! How excited I was to read that Bieber fever has struck BET! It turns out that Canadian Justin Bieber has been nominated for the best new artist award at the Black Entertainment Television awards being held June 27, 2010. He is in the same category as such artists as Nicki Manaj and Young Money. In addition, earlier in the week, I had the joy of watching the You Tube video of then unknown Greyson Chance performing a very stirring piano rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” I felt great joy in the resurgence of talented teens who are actually making waves in the world not based on their misdeeds, but on their actual talent.
For the life of me, I still cant figure out the popularity of Miley Cyrus. I have struggled through Hannah Montana and even forced myself to watch a music video or two to see what the buzz was. To be perfectly honest, it seems like more headlines were made about her risqué’ photo shoots with Annie Leibovitz and pole tricks during her Kid’s award performance than about her actual talent. For a minute, it seemed as if the youth of America were more concerned with smoke and mirrors than with the abilities of the up and coming artists of today.
Then Bieber Fever struck. Now initially a lot of people took Justin Bieber as a flash in the pan. Little girls screaming for cute little boys at shopping malls is nothing new, however Justin Bieber proceeded to amaze me with his versatility. He expanded his music and has been able to collaborate with artists such as Ludacris and has plans to work with fellow Canadian Drake. Justin Bieber has been able to carry his musical appeal across the board, having music mogul P. Diddy back his Best New Artist nomination with the sentiment that “if he’s hot, he belongs here.”
After being a You Tube sensation, it was announced that Greyson Chance has been signed to the same record label as Lady Gaga herself. Even with minimal training, he still seems to outshine the live performances of other so called “professionals.” Only time will tell if Greyson will continue to shine.
I’m excited for future of Young Hollywood. I’ve become tired of hearing about how many boob jobs a “starlet” has received or how drunk they were coming out of a club. Justin Bieber and Greyson Chance have been able to take us back to a place where you have to have talent to receive accolades. These two young men have nice, clean songs that everyone is able to listen to. Most importantly they did it without the scandal and drama that seems to accompany so many young stars today. Only time will tell if the BET viewing audience shares the same sentiment. I will wait to see if Justin wins his award.
