I have been doing a lot of thinking lately and it always seems to get me in trouble, but I do it anyway. As I read the paper, I often wonder why th school systems are laying off so many teachers and aides- who do they think will be in charge of the students in the classrooms that are getting bigger by the numbers every year? Also, why does a school need 2 football fields and 10 locker rooms but not good teachers?
Another thought that comes to mind when I am reading the paper or watching the news has to do with criminals. I am not against people being punished for their crimes but why do we seem to give the least harmless criminals the harshest sentences? A person that has been convicted of rape and murder can get less time than someone who doesn’t pay child support or who has been caught driving without a license several times in a row. Which would you rather have living next door to you?
Child support is another issue. I understand that people need to support their children, but why do we lock men and women who are without a job up in jail becuase they haven’t paid. Do we seriously think that they can pay support if they are in jail? Are you giving them a job and paying them so they can pay. Why don’t we set aside some form of highway work or something for them to do? Makes sense to me!
Also, why do we let people sit on death row for 50+ years and yet we constantly complain about jail over crowding? There is a way to fix that problem- it is called the electric chair! I do not believe that the electric chair is a harsh or inhumane way to kill someone who has taken another life on purpose or tortured a small child by molesting them. what choice did the victim of their crime get? NONE!!! Why do the criminals have a choice?
Also, wondering why we as a country make it hard for farmers to make a living but if it weren’t for them, where would our food come from? Do people these days think that all food is grown right there in the grocery store?
Why do we as a society try to change things that aren’t broken? This country was buiit on the Bible and on Christian beliefs and yet, it is almost a crime to mention the Bible in school? Does that make sense?
Why is ISTEP testing so important in schools? I know several kids who do bad on tests, but are very intelligent. Just because someone can’t pass a test, doesn’t mean that they are not smart. My husband does not have a high school diploma or a GED and can not read much at all, but he can look at something and figure it out and he is very smart in math and installs machines in factories that most people would not have a clue what to do with. Does that make him dumb because he could never pass an ISTEP. No, he has good old fashioned street smarts and a lot of logical common sense. As a college attendee, I do not have that same logic. I am considered smart by test grades, but lack the common sense that it sometimes takes to do something.
Why as a country, will we gather together in times of tragedy, but we won’t step up to help someone in need? We will rally together when things like Sept. 11 happens, but we won’t fly a flag when a soldier dies and comes home from war.
I believe that we truly need to think about others and how important our time on earth is. Just my thought for the day.
