June Holidays & Celebrations

by itchyfish

June 1: Donut Day

I don’t think anyone needs to tell you how to celebrate Donut Day “a dozen” different ways.

June 7: Boone Day

Boone Day honors Daniel Boone. Head to the library for biographies on this American frontiersman.

June 8: Vacuum Cleaner Day

I was thinking that I should definitely vacuum on this day but then I thought if it is Vacuum Cleaner Day, shouldn’t my vacuum cleaner have the day off?

June 11: Kamehameha Day

Kamehameha Day is celebrated in Hawaii to honor King Kamehameha, a great warrior who won control of the Hawaiian Islands and united them into one kingdom. In Hawaii Kamehameha Day is celebrated with songs, chants, leis and luaus.

June 14: Flag Day

The Continental Congress adopted the first official American flag on June 14, 1777.

Flag Day is a day to fly your flag and wear red, white and blue. Some communities hold parades in honor of Flag Day.

June 15: Cracker Jack’s Day

Today’s the day to splurge on a favorite childhood snack, Cracker Jacks. I can’t wait to see what my prize is!

The third Sunday in June is Father’s Day.

June 20: Bald Eagle Day

June 21: The First Day of Summer

June 24: Insect Appreciation Day

This holiday really bugs me.

June 24: St. John’s Day

The early Christian church chose June 24th as the day to celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist. In New Mexico Pueblo Indians celebrate the festival of St. John with corn dances. In Puerto Rico, bonfires are lit on beaches and people swim the sea between midnight and dawn in memory of the saint who baptized people with water.

Month Long Celebrations in June

National Iced Tea Month

Why not try to make some “sun tea” to celebrate the arrival of summer?

American Rivers Month

Look for opportunities in your area to join river clean up projects often held in June. Of course you could always go fishing as a family and do an informal river clean up during your visit.

Dairy Month

How about making some homemade ice cream to celebrate dairy month?

Rose Month

June is a wonderful time to visit a botanical garden or historical botanical garden.

Zoo Month

Why not get out your hats, sunscreens and misters and hit the zoos. The animals are waiting to see you.

Take a sneak peak at these amazing giraffe photos from Virginia Safari Park.

National Reading Month

Every month is reading month at our house but June is a great time to go to the library to sign up for kid’s summer reading programs and adult summer reading programs too. It’s also a great time to stock on some new vacation reads. Happy June!
