Could Joseph Gordon-Levitt play the Riddler in Batman 3? I know the villain conjures up disturbing images of Jim Carrey in neon green spandex and that commercial guy who wants to get you money from the government, but I’d actually love to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt take on the Riddler in Batman 3, as per the reports rolling in from sites like TotalFilm.com that he might have a chance at playing the villain. Here are a few reasons why I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the Riddler are the perfect match for Batman 3:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Riddler would be a big question mark for me, had it not been for ‘Inception’. I mean, he was amazing in romantic comedy ‘(500) Days of Summer’, but I was already picturing him being typecast as that same lovelorn guy that he played in teen comedy ’10 Things I Hate About You’ over and over again. However, he proved he can take on an action-packed role in ‘Inception’, and I’d love to see what else he can do as the Riddler in Batman 3. Which brings us to:
10 Things I Hate About You
Sorry, but the teen girl in me absolutely loves the idea of both male leads from ’10 Things I Hate About You’ playing Batman villains. If you’d have told me in 1999 that Heath Ledger would someday play the Joker and Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be considered for the Riddler role, I would have imagined a disaster like ‘Batman & Robin’. Of course now Heath Ledger has blown everyone away with his extreme transformation into the Joker and made himself more iconic by dying young, so it’s going to be hard for whomever steps in as the Batman 3 villain to live up to what he became. But if anyone can do it, I think it’s his old costar Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Like Heath Ledger, he’s proving that he’s more than a rom-com star (heck, he even beat the child star odds!), and I think it’s time he stepped up his game by playing the master of mind games. Plus it’s just so bizarre how Joseph Gordon-Levitt started looking like Heath Ledger as he got older.
Riddle me this: Can Christopher Nolan make the Riddler less of a joke?
Well, Christopher Nolan definitely did a decent job of updating the Joker, so I can see him give this riddle-loving rouge an epic makeover. Really all he needs to do is give the character the look and persona of the Riddler from the ‘The Batman’ of 2004-2008; in that animated series, he has a darker wardrobe and is portrayed as a smooth-talking intellectual instead of an obnoxious, over-the-top goofball. I would love to see what kind of crazy riddles would be used in Batman 3, and the viral marketing campaign options here would be endless.
So here’s to hoping that Christopher Nolan was impressed enough with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in ‘Inception’ to give him a chance to redeem this kooky character with some really deadly riddles. Christopher Nolan has proved that he’s great at messing with the mind with his latest movie, so it seems like the perfect time to make this cerebral character more sinister with his mind games.
