Cute is in the eye of the beholder, and when I behold jelly shoes, I shiver. No, I shudder (and then I shiver).
I love trends just as much as the next fashionista, but some styles should never make a comeback, and nothing screams that point quite like jelly shoes. But back they are, and if we’re going to wear them, it’s prudent to at least pick the most affordable and least ugly of the — In my opinion — horrendous style.
Nowhere is “the lesser of evils” more accurate than when I chose my top picks for jelly sandals under $50. You won’t find any gladiator styles, no high-heels, and I even decided to skip over the Harajuku- inspired jelly wedges from Victoria’s Secret as an intended dishonorable mention.
Instead, I approached the task in the manner a Princess might approach a frog — cautiously, with puckered lips and closed eyes, and with a small amount of hope. I didn’t find a perfect Prince, but I wasn’t completely disappointed.
Chinese Laundry ‘Annabella’ Jelly Flat
Chinese Laundry has taken the bold (and smart) step of combining the jelly fad with the flat fad. I have to admit that it works. These jelly flats come in black, have a cute, unobtrusive bow on the foot, and even have little holes on the side to help your feet breathe.
Nordstrom, $39.95 Sizes 6-10
Poetic License ‘My Haven’ Jelly Jangle Thong
For the lady or girl who likes her jellies super sweet, these jelly sandals are perfect. The flat bottoms are multi-colored, the tops come in clear, purple, or blue. A rose accent completes the look.
Zappos, $48.95 Sizes 6-10
BCBG Women’s Magnolia Jelly Thong
Available in three colors — berry, transparent, and fume, these jelly sandals have an added flair with a rhinestone accent which matches the color of the shoe.
AZ Shoe, $24.50 Sizes 6-10
Nine West Jelly Sandal
These jelly shoes from Nine West are cute, like a glitzed up pair of flip-flops, without the flop. Admission: I would probably wear these. Even though I am not inclined to wear flowers on my feet, these are super adorable and the picture does not do them justice. They are available in black/white or multi.
Nine West, $29.99-$39.99 Sizes 6-10
BCBG Women’s Babe Sandal
BCBG makes another appearance, this time with a platform wedge. Available in three colors (pink, silver, black) , this jelly shoe is pretty close to a normal summer sandal. The jewel embellishment is in the shape of a heart and matches the color of the shoe.
Shoe Mall, $39 Sizes 7-10
While I prefer my jellies on toast and my jams on the stereo, I can’t deny the appeal of jelly shoes, especially during the heat of summer. At these prices, and with some cute styles coming around in an otherwise odd fashion trend, I find myself shuddering a little less each time I shop for jelly shoes.
