Jake and Vienna were the unlucky 13th couple from the Bachelor not to make a go of their relationship. TMZ reports today that it was Jake who booted Vienna out the door around the rumors that she is cheating with the ABC star of Greek, Gregory Michael. The rumors have been showing their ugly teeth for the last few weeks, but apparently, Jake knows more about them than we do and ended the relationship. This is the story the public is given about the break-up. This is more than likely not what really happened.
Both Jake and Vienna were reality show junkies. Jake went from the Bachelor to Dancing With the Stars. Vienna had auditioned for a few obsolete reality shows before coming on the Bachelor. More evidence of being a fame hound came from Jake’s ex-girlfriend, when she reported that Jake called her the day after he gave the final rose to Vienna asking if he would take her back. The girlfriend reports that Jake claimed he did not care about any of the girls on the show, including Vienna, and that he was just doing it to get his name up in lights.
Although the news that Jake and Vienna were planning an elaborate wedding this summer was meant for publicity for the show, it did not make headlines for long. It appeared the public was losing interest. The two had been used to being front page news after hooking up on The Bachelor. This break-up has put their names back into the most-searched category on the Internet, and their faces are appearing on the front page of tabloids once again. This has a publicity feel to it more than a romance disbanding. I never really believed there was a romance in the first place.
The two reality show stars know what needs to be done to keep their names alive and out there, and this is what it takes: conjure up some “shocking” news when things go stale. I would not be surprised if Jake and Vienna had actually not been together at all after The Bachelor ended. They were seen in calculated publicity shots, but random pictures of the two on the street or candidly doing some sort of daily activity just didn’t exist. We saw them in a few posed “having dinner” shots, and one or two posed “day at the beach” shots.
Reality shows really do not consist of that much reality these days. Everything we see is edited for our viewing, which means the show will take on the storyline that the producers want it to. It is impossible to film for just a few hours and get that much entertainment that will fill up an entire season of episodes. The hundreds of hours of footage filmed is then sculpted into whatever makes the best viewing.
For all we know, Jake and Vienna might have realized early on that the two did not a couple make. The other contestants in the house hated Vienna, and were all banding together to get Jake to give Vienna the boot early on. Once Vienna was portrayed as the most hated, you just knew she was going nowhere. This is the stuff that makes great “reality” TV. The most dramatic and shocking end to the show was to have Jake and Vienna hook-up.
At the time Vienna was filming The Bachelor, she was living with an “ex”-boyfriend. The two had remained friends and shared a residence together. Jake’s phone call to his “ex” more than likely did happen, and was probably the first actual “reality” reporting to come out of the show. Jake more than likely told his “ex” the truth: That the girls, including Vienna, were part of the show, and that they really did mean nothing to him.
Once the hoopla from the hook-up of Jake and Vienna died down, they certainly could not do a fake wedding for more publicity, so they did the next best thing. They announced a Bachelor break-up, even after the two were probably not a couple anyway. And there is your reality show-biz.. So, no crying for Jake and Vienna today; they are more than likely relieved that they can start showing up in public with the real people they have been dating. My guess is the timeline for the break-up was written into Jake and Vienna’s contract, and we are just witnessing the end to a well-scripted reality show with very little reality.
