Looking for a cool retro Halloween costume idea this Halloween? How about dressing like a character from the hit TV show, Mad Men?
AMC’s Mad Men is one of the hottest shows on television. Set in the 1960’s, Mad Men features characters Don and Betty Draper, Joan Holloway and Roger Sterling, all dressed to the nines in their best 1960’s style. Best of all, the Mad Men theme is a great Halloween costume idea for couples. Here are some tips for Mad Men Halloween costumes:
Don Draper. Ad agency partner Don Draper is known for his graysuits, crisp white shirts and skinny two- inch ties. Also, a ton of Brylcream (slicking your hair completely over with a left side part is key to this costume). Accessories include a constant cigarette and a stiff drink. Because Draper is known for his womanizing ways, a lipstick-kissed shirt collar is an excellent touch. Oh, and if you haven’t worn a suit since your last job interview (or if you don’t even own a suit) , there’s a 2010 Mad Men inspired line at Banana Republic.
Betty Draper Francis. No longer a desperate housewife to Don (she remarried in season 4), Betty’s got a perfect flip hairdo and the 1960’s classic homemaker look– although she also cleans up very nicely, going from 1960’s housewife to Jackie Kennedy dinner party chic. I’d go for the wifey look myself, with a classic full-skirted or belted dress. You can find 1960’s style dresses at vintage stores and on eBay. As for Betty’s hairdo, get the curlers out. And if you opt to dress as a pregnant Betty (in season 3 she gave birth to baby Eugene) you can still accessorize with a Tom Collins and a cigarette. Like many women in the 1960’s, Betty didn’t forgo those habits while pregnant.
Joan Holloway Harris. Red is the word here for this femme fatale/office manager. You’ll need a bright red wig, a sexy red dress (stuffed bra if needed) and the reddest red lipstick you can find. You’ll also want lush, false eyelashes and a sexy Marilyn Monroe walk for that telltale Joan look.
Roger Sterling. For this silver fox founding partner, a nice 3 piece suit is needed here, but even more key is the snow white hair. Be sure to carry an arsenal of smokes and drinks too. And because this character has already had two heart attacks, you could play April Fools at your Halloween party and make him have a third. Nah, maybe that’s not such a good idea.
