Making all the baby shower stuff yourself this year? That’s great! You’ll have a blast! There are many different gifts, decor and party favors that you can easily make without spending much money. Here are a few of my favorites projects which feature “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” themes.
Purchase adhesive paper for your home printer and you can easily make “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” candy bars and more. Use your printing program to design the perfect background, borders, lettering and other images. Print out the stickers, peel away the adhesive backing, then wrap them around full size or miniature candy bars. These make great party favors for any baby shower. Or, wrap the designed sticker around a simple glass votive candle holder and gift to the new mom. You can even create assorted stickers and cut them out. Give them in a nice envelope as a shower gift. The mom can use them to decorate lamps, trash cans, diaper pails, light switch covers – even the crib.
Make an “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” sign for the new parents’ door by using a onesie, baby shirt or even a simplistic dress. Write on the outfit with paint markers then create other designs around the lettering. You can use stencils, rubber stamping or even shirt paints to create the design you want. Double-sided tape can be used to attach the announcement outfit on the door.
Use small stickers to make ordinary suckers look like baby-theme suckers. You’ll easily find “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” stickers at any craft store. Purchase large bags of flat suckers which are individually wrapped. Place a sticker on each one, tie a pink or blue bow around each, then give them away as party favors. Or, arrange round suckers in a Styrofoam cone. Start from the bottom and work your way towards the tip of the cone. Make an “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” banner for the very top of the sucker tree. Use a toothpick or piece of a wooden skewer to attach the banner. Or, use one flat sucker with an announcement sticker on it to be the top of the tree. Between the round suckers place curled ribbon on toothpicks or even smaller “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” cardboard plaques. These will add interest to the tree while helping to cover bald spots between some of the suckers. The finished sucker tree can be the centerpiece and an edible one at that.
If you have a chain link fence you can quickly create a message to the world about your new baby. Choose white Styrofoam cups or colored disposable cups to start. Arrange the cups so that the bottom of them will face the outside and the interior of the cups will face your home. Spell out “It’s A Boy” or “It’s A Girl” by sliding the cups into the openings of the fence. It’s quick and easy to do. Stand back after the message is written so you can view and check to see if any of the cups need to be rearranged. It’s fun, cute and really cheap.
Use magnetic sheeting from a craft store to create a banner for your car. You can purchase printable magnetic sheets from an office supply place and print the announcement directly onto the magnet. Or, you can use stickers, paint markers and similar methods to create the message. If needed, cover the final design with a piece of clear shelf liner to laminate it.
Whereas most stickers have a piece that’s peeled off the back to expose the adhesive you can also purchase paper that does the reverse. This sticker paper is peeled away from the front so that you can place the stickers on the inside of the glass in your vehicle’s back window. Use stencils to cut out the lettering you want or purchase each individual letter from the same craft store. Stick the announcement on your back window and everyone will know you have a new bundle of joy. Remove the stickers when you want – they’re much easier to remove than the old types that were impossible to get off the glass.
Purchase cutout letters to make your announcement in a different manner. The letters are available at dollar-theme stores for a buck and you can use them to make a fun banner in your home. Cut a long piece of wide cardboard and cover it with paint, wallpaper border, fabric or even gift wrap. Glue strings on the back – one string for each letter. Cut the lengths of the strings different so that the letters will hang at various lengths. Glue a letter to each string and attach the banner to a wall with double-sided tape.
Having a baby is such an exciting time – who wouldn’t want to announce it to the world? You can do just that without spending a lot of money by doing some or all of these projects. It’s just one more fun thing you’ll have going on while becoming a new parent. Any one of the projects takes only a short amount of time but produces an unusual way to celebrate the gender of your new baby.
