Who would have thought that as the 21st Century grinds on, that Saudi Arabia, the oil rich theocracy ruled over by petro billionaire playboys, would prove to be a better ally of Israel than the United States, at least in some respects?
How else can one characterize a situation where, on the one hand Saudi Arabia is arranging for Israel to fly over its air space should it choose to smite the Iranians, and on the other hand, the United States is plotting with the UN to embarrass Israel over the Gaza Flotilla affair? (Both, by the way, are hotly denied by the governments involved.)
The world indeed has turned upside down.
The tacit Saudi-Israeli alliance can be simply explained. For all of the Islamic pretensions of being utterly opposed to the “Zionist Entity”, the Oil Sheiks are even more motivated by the fear of being nuked by the crazy Mullahs across the Arabic Gulf. They would very much like to be left in peace to enjoy their oil billions so that they can take holidays in Dubai or the South of France to enjoy all the debauchery that the Kingdom forbids within its borders.
The Obama administration, on the other hand, is probably the most pro Arab government in the history of the United States, viewing Israel less of an ally as a problem. This attitude is causing the White House to go to great lengths to diss Israel, even to the extent of lapsing into borderline anti Semitism. How else to explain this?:
“The government of Israel has been consulting with the U.S. government on its own Israeli investigative panel, to be led by a retired supreme court justice, that would include respected international participants, including one from the U.S. But the Obama administration is reportedly saying that such a ‘kosher panel’ is not good enough to satisfy the international community, or the Obama White House. “
Never mind that a UN investigation of Israel’s handling of the Gaza Flotilla would have the same validity as a Taliban investigation of the conduct of the War in Afghanistan. No doubt, as Bill Kistol suggests, this will be used as a precedence for the “international community” to make mischief with making life for American soldiers and intelligence operatives a living hell/
Of course all of that doesn’t matter to the sixties radicals who apparently now determine foreign policy. The goal is now no longer to advance the interests of the United States, but to appease the enemies of the United States. If that means hurting an American ally and bringing about a nuclear Iran and all that implies, that seems to be considered a feature rather than a bug.
