My family and I have been vacationing in Hawaii for the past week and a half, and have enjoyed a variety of island treasures, such as macadamia based candies. We have purchased three or four different brands, and have found there can be quite a difference in the taste and quality sold in local stores.
Our most recent version that we have been treating ourselves to is the Island Princess Macadamia Nuts Covered in Chocolate. These chocolates are made in Hawaii, and the box states that they are made from the “Finest Milk Chocolate”.
The box is colored purple and holds 15 chocolates, each one nestled inside of a gold plastic container. From the outside of the box, it looks like it should hold more than 15 pieces, but this box does state that it holds 15 pieces, and some of the other brands we purchased do not give that information on the outside of the box.
Island Princess Macadamia Nuts Covered in Chocolate are round, with one whole macadamia nut in the center. There is a fair amount of chocolate covering the macadamia nut, and each chocolate is drizzled with white chocolate on the outside, giving these candies a higher end look.
We did have a problem with one of the candies not containing any macadamia nuts, which was a bit disappointing, but other than that I would purchase these again. They were on sale for only $3.29, and the milk chocolate that is used in making these candies seems to be a better quality than the previous brand we purchased (which was very waxy). To me, the chocolate looks and tastes slightly like a darker chocolate than it does a milk chocolate, which is great since I prefer dark chocolate, but haven’t been able to find dark chocolate covered macadamia nuts. The nuts themselves are fresh and crunchy, but not salty.
I would not say the taste and consistency of these chocolates is on par with Godiva chocolates, but then they don’t come with the Godiva price tag either. Five chocolates is equal to one serving, and each serving contains 157 calories, 10 grams of fat, 5 grams of saturated fat, zero grams of trans fat, 6 mg of cholesterol, 19 mg of sodium, 15 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of dietary fiber, 13 grams of sugars, and 2 grams of protein. The protein comes from the macadamia nuts, which means these candies are not completely made of empty calories like some candy bars on the market.
One serving also provides 1% of your daily allowance of vitamin A, 5% calcium, and 4% iron. Island Princess Macadamia Nuts Covered in Chocolate are made on the island of Oahu, but are available throughout the Hawaiian Islands. We purchased these at Longs Drugs in Kona, on the Big Island.
