For years, I’ve said the Jenny Craig diet is not healthy and, in some instances, can be dangerous. With several of my friends losing weight on Jenny Craig, then gaining it all back and more, I was surprised to see not only did actress Sara Rue use the unhealthy Jenny Craig diet to lose 50lbs, she’s now trying to persuade others to do the same. As Jenny Craig’s new spokesperson, Sara Rue, in my opinion, is doing would-be dieters a disservice, and here’s why.
The Cost of Jenny Craig Diet – The first thing any would-be dieter should consider before starting the Jenny Craig diet is how expensive it is. Of course, it depends on which Jenny Craig plan you choose but, if you want to lose a reasonable amount of weight (25 lbs or more) the cost is high.
Most of the plans require breakfast, lunch and dinner from Jenny Craig with the cost of an average meal around $7 plus shipping. For every week you are on the Jenny Craig diet, you will spend at least $135 on food, plus the cost of shipping them (another $40) if you can’t pick them up at a local Jenny Craig. Add to that another $30-50 a week at the grocery store for milk, yoghurt, fruit and vegetables the plan requires and you’re looking at least $675 a month in food costs. Sure, when you’re an actress like Sara Rue, $675 a month for food might not be much. For your average American though, it’s a lot of money.
Some Jenny Craig plans also require a membership fee, upwards of $35 for a six-week program and just another expense in ‘losing weight’
Jenny Craig Sells Processed Food – While just about every doctor will warn you eating processed foods daily is unhealthy and leads to illnesses like cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease, Jenny Craig is pushing three meals a day of packaged, frozen and processed foods. Reading the back of a Jenny Craig you’ll soon find you need a degree in chemistry as half the ingredients listed there are chemicals and preservatives most of us don’t know what they are. If Sara Rue thinks persuading American women to eat frozen books full of junk is ‘admirable’, then my estimation of her has gone downhill. Fast.
Jenny Craig Sugar Factor – Many of the Jenny Craig foods are loaded with sugar, with candy bars, cakes and cookies featuring high in their plan. Even the ‘Jenny Any Time Bar’, a supposedly healthy energy bar, is nothing more than a fortified candy bar stuffed with chemicals. A sample menu gives the average dieter at least 70 grams of sugar every day, which in calories is about 25% of your daily food intake. As doctors tell you it should never be more than 10%, you can only guess how unhealthy this is.
Jenny Craig Meals Low in Fiber – Basically because you’re eating glorified junk food dressed up as ‘diet food’, the fiber content in Jenny Craig meals is exceptionally low. Eating a low fiber diet can lead to cancer of the stomach, bowel and intestines, among other diseases and is a no-no for just about everyone wanting a healthy lifestyle. Sara Rue might want to consider telling would-be Jenny Craig dieters to take a fiber supplement if they insist on eating this unhealthy junk and calling it ‘food’.
Jenny Craig Doesn’t Teach You How To Eat – Unlike Weight Watchers, which is a healthy way of eating as you’re taught how to eat ‘real food’ correctly, Jenny Craig is nothing more than a diet of frozen foods and junk foods that are made to be low calorie yet are unhealthy. More importantly, Jenny Craig doesn’t teach you how to eat ‘real food’, so the minute you go off this unhealthy diet and your body goes back to normal, you’ll gain the weight right back and more.
Jenny Craig a Glorified Scam? – In my opinion, Jenny Craig is nothing more than a glorified scam. It’s a program that’s set up to help you lose weight but, what they don’t tell you is, there’s no way in God’s green earth you can keep the weight loss off unless you remain on their ‘maintenance program’ for life. Thus, spending far too much money on packaged, processed, unhealthy food and making the Jenny Craig company even richer. Again, Sara Rue should think twice before affiliating herself with this company.
Personally, I can’t believe someone like Sara Rue, an otherwise smart actress, not only did the Jenny Craig diet but is also recommending it to others. As just about every other celebrity that’s been the Jenny Craig spokesperson can testify to (if not verbally, but in the way they look), every one of them has gained the weight they lost back (have you seen Kirstie Alley recently or Sarah, Duchess of York?) and Sara Rue, unfortunately, probably will too.
