Mel Gibson co-starred with Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon series that catapulted him into megastar status. Starting with the eponymous 1987 film (and three sequels), Gibson played Los Angeles police sergeant Martin Riggs, a suicidal cop working the narcotics detail who is plagued by more mental problems than just a desire to off himself.
After committing a psychotic act during a drug bust, the L.A.P.D. is forced to transfer Riggs to homicide, where he becomes the partner of the stalwart Detective Roger Murtaugh, played by the African American Glover. (Ironically, not only is Glover — who was in all four Lethal Weapons movies — a noted activist, the movies’ director, Richard Donner, was committed to civil rights and part of the anti-apartheid in South Africa movement, and anti-racism flavored the background of the pictures.)
Martin Riggs — like the actor who created him, Mel Gibson — is a fan of the Three Stooges, and Gibson’s acting is about as sophisticated as that of Curly Howard, another oddball who had a strange off-screen personal life. In real life, Jerome “Curly” Howard’s real life contretemps were mostly limited to his love of dogs (he had many) and his propensity for being bamboozled by gold-digging babes, whom he married.
Mel Gibson’s actions in the last four years in which he has engaged in sociopathic (if not downright psychotic) behavior seems to indicate he is — at best — an alcoholic with anger management issues. However, his recent treatment of his “Baby Mama” Oksana Grigorieva, threatening her with violence and possibly physically abusing her, beggars the question: Is the Oscar-winning director-producer-star ofBraveheart and other hit movies mentally ill?
As the Reverend Jessie Jackson said about Gibson’s racist comment, his behavior over the past four years suggests a deep character flaw in the man.
In 2006, Gibson went into a crazed, anti-Semitic tirade after a Jewish California Highway Patrolman pulled him over for drunk driving. His comments went farther than Jackson’s own “Hymietown” comment during the 1984 Democratic Presidential primary.
It’s been publicly revealed by Oksana Grigorieva, Gibson’s former mistress and the mother of his eight-month-old child Lucia, that the Oscar-winner not only subjected her to egregious verbal abuse but threatened her life.
Tape Recordings
A week after accusing Gibson of having physically assaulted her in January, Grigorieva has relased tape recordings in which Gibson raves at her and threatens to burn down her house. The tapes back up Grigorieva’s contention that Gibson has a violent temper and is a threat to her and their eight-month old daughter, Lucia.
Grigorieva claims she taped Gibson in order to protect herself as the tapes are proof that Gibson is a dangerous person. She can use the recordings in court under California law.
On the tapes, an out-of-control Mel Gibson attacks the 40-year-old Grigorieva for her looks and the way she dresses, yelling at her that she looks like a “f—–g pig in heat.” He then warns that “a pack of n—–s” would rape her if she went outside the home looking like that.
Gibson liberally lambastes his ex- with the “C” word and calls her a “bitch” and a “whore,” the most polite words in his vocabulary. To say he has grown disenchanted with her is an understatement.
“You are the most synthetic person,” Gibson tells Grigorieva on the tape. “Who the f–k are you?”
The two split up after a three-year-long affair that ended Gibson’s 29-year-marriage that produced seven children. Gibson and Grigorieva’s illegitimate daughter Lucia was born in October 2009. They couple split up soon after that.
Grigorieva told an English newspaper on Sunday, June 29th, that Gibson is a cruel man who has not paid her any child support, which means she and the infant are living on the cusp of poverty.
