Is your man telling you the truth? There are signs your man, be it your husband, boyfriend, lover, or “significant other” is lying to your face if you’re astute enough to watch for the signs.
Most people pause before telling a lie. It is because their brain has to collect itself for a moment before letting loose of that whopper. Notice whether or not he pauses when you ask him what you want to know.
Liars often repeat the question. This is similar to pausing. Again, it is a way for the brain to collect itself. Consider this example:
Question: “Where were you last night?”
Answer: “What do you mean, where was I last night?”
The question was short and direct. There was no reason to ask for clarification except to stall so as to think of a lie.
One way to find out whether he is lying is to get him to tell his story in a different order. He has explained the story to you in a particular sequence. Now question him in such a way that he has to tell the story in reverse. Someone who is lying often can not do this.
Body language will tell you a great deal as to whether he is telling the truth. Does he shift back and forth from foot to foot? Does he seem to not know what to do with his hands? If so, he is probably nervous that you will discover his lie. He may try instead to use no gestures at all to cover up his lie. For example, he may clench his fist or try shoving both hands into his pockets. Someone telling the truth will have a normal stance and their hands and feet will reflect will also be used in their usual manner.
If he is lying, he may either stare directly into your face and relate his tale or he may avoid looking at you altogether. Neither is normal. While we make eye contact with other people when we talk to them, a “the liar stare” is more akin to the look of a child begging for something, and in this case, it is begging to be believed.
Of course, there are those liars that are so good at telling their tales that they can act normally while lying. However, there are some things you can watch for that are beyond their control. Lie detector tests are effective because they rely on such factors as respiration and perspiration. Pay attention to his breathing pattern. If his breathing becomes more shallow or he begins to pant, he’s not telling you the truth. Take his hands in yours – are they sweaty? Unless he is normally a sweaty guy, you might find your answer by “reading” his palm. While you can’t pull out a stethoscope to check his heart rate, you can put your head on his chest and listen to his heart. A racing heart beat will indicate that he is either lying or needs to go to the hospital.
The most important thing to go on when trying to determine whether he is lying is your gut feeling. If you think he’s lying to you, he probably is. However, don’t forget that the reason he’s lying might not be a bad thing. Perhaps he’s lying because he’s planning a surprise for you. In any event, don’t show your cards, so to speak, the first time you think you have proof of a lie. Sit back, watch, and wait. If there is something going on, it is always better to gather proof.
