Is Chiropractic Care a Good or Bad Choice?

by itchyfish

What do the chiropractors you see today do?

The word Chiropractor comes from the Greek words cheir, and praxis, cheir meaning “hand” and praxis meaning “practice”, thus defining the methods of a chiropractor. While most people claim that chiropractors pop your spine in line, they really are just manipulating the different vertebra, regulating the movement of the vertebra as they move against each other. X-rays of before and after rarely show any visible difference in the alignment of the spine.

How does spine manipulation ease your pain?

The majority of back pain comes from your vertebra resting in an awkward position on the nerves, causing a decrease in the electrical transmission through the nerves, creating acute pain. Studies show that even a tiny amount of pressure on a nerve can cause as much as a 50% decrease in electrical transmission through a nerve. chiropractors move your vertebra in different directions easing pressure on the different nerves extending from the spinal cord, thus relieving the pain.

What are the pros, or good things about chiropractic care?

Visits to the chiropractor are relatively cost efficient and pretty guaranteed to work. Studies around the world not only show that chiropractic methods relieve pain on a great scale, but also reduce dependence on potentially addictive and harmful pain medications.

What are the cons, or bad things about chiropractic care?

There are claims of worsening back pain, and that the constant popping in and out of the vertebra wears down the cartilage between disks. But what is not mentioned is that there is no proof for either of these claims. The main things wrong with chiropractic care is not in the treatment itself, but in the price, the fact that not many insurance companies cover chiropractic care, and that there is a lack of good research to prove the effectiveness. Yes, there are multiple studies, but not done by the researchers people want to see do the research. And then there can be an additional discomfort after the first couple visits, but it is relieved in a day or so, and the long term affects are most relieving.

Is there anyone who should NOT use chiropractic care?

It is suggested that people with osteoporosis, gout, bone cancer, or bone or joint fractures might be at risk of further damage or pain if they use chiropractic care. So if you are a candidate for any of these you would need to discuss the possibility with your health care physician before attempting to get adjusted.

The potential for chiropractic care.

The biggest boost towards people choosing chiropractic care are the numerous studies showing the potential dangers of using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and narcotic pain relievers on a long-term basis. More and more people are choosing to go the drug-free approach of chiropractic care.
