The iPhone. I got the original more than a year ago and have since upgraded to the 3g version and in the last couple months the newest 3g(s) version. I have always thought this phone was the coolest every day technological device on the market. That is until I bought Apple’s iPad.
After a month on the market the iPad had sold over a million units. At first there was buzz all over the internet about what a dumb idea an oversized ipod touch was. I legitimately believed the hype too until I could get alone with this incredible mobile device. With a 1024×768 display on a 9.7 inch screen: apps, books, and browsers look incredible. The first app I used was the iBook to see how the iPad display compared with similar products such as the Amazon Kindle. I had used a Kindle for reading two books in my past and so I felt safe with making a comparison.. The iPad blew the Kindle out of the water. One common question about the new Apple product was whether books would be easy to read. Not only are they easy, but I actually prefer to read a book on the iPad rather than in print. Not only books, but apps such as Wall Street Journal’s daily newspaper app again make the user prefer this electronic version over the original print paper. It’s safe to say though that the iPad is something you must see for yourself. Give yourself 30 minutes with one of these devices and you’ll fall in love. Read the paper, your favorite magazine, a classic novel. Open up one of the thousands of apps you’ve been used to on the iPod touch and iPhone and you’ll be blown away by the crispness this new screen adds. Games work wonderfully, browsing the internet is fast and easy. There is no need for a keyboard because the virtual board on the touch screen works even better.
The speakers could be louder but other than that I have no complaints. And be sure to get one of the higher capacity versions because you’ll be surprised at how much space things like TV shows take up in HD quality. But other than that this iPad is a beautiful renovation of the tablet PC. Apple’s design is exemplary again and as more people get their hands on this device, it will sell even faster. Go do yourself a favor and pick one up if you can afford it now. Especially if you were considering a Kindle, just throw an extra 200 dollars and get so much content other than a superior electronic reading device it will be impossible to put this down. The iPad is a viable replacement for a laptop as well because it does everything a computer can do and more. The seamless integration Apple has come accustomed to makes using this product just feel ‘RIGHT’.
Exterior Design: 9.0 – It feels a lot like an oversized iPhone. It is not too heavy and is perfect for laying down, sitting down, or standing up.
Display: 9.5 – Incredible. The smooth graphics on this 1024×768 display are unrivaled. Slight glare in heavy sun setting is the only setback.
Media Use: 10.0 – Go read a magazine or newspaper on this or watch a TV show or movie in HD and you’ll wish you could give a higher score than a 10.
Internet: 8.5 – Lacking Adobe Flash however HTML 5 seems to be just as good and this is apparent on the iPad.
Battery Life: 10.0 – Lasts a couple days of heavy usage with no recharge. What more could you ask for.
Overall: 9.5 – This is a must get if you can afford it and there are plenty of ways to convince yourself it is worth it because of all the tasks this device can complete with ease.
