You call up a company to give a complaint or pay a bill. You want to talk to somebody, but a computerized person answers the phone instead. The computerized person always to be a woman when she intercepts your call to the company you want to talk to. This computerized woman always is full of questions. Who are you? What do you want to do? Do you want to know information about your account? Do you want to pay your bill? Of course the computerized woman has to ask you all your personal information. The funny thing is the computerized woman isn’t even a person and she knows more about you than all your friends combined. Thinking about it, this computerized woman may know more about you than your own wife. This is technology and this is the world we live in. Interpersonal communication is a thing of the past.
After a few answered questions, this computerized woman is acting like she is your wife. She says things like “I didn’t hear the answer to the question, could you repeat yourself” and “what did you say?” Eventually, you get tired and feel defeated. You feel like you had just been through one of those arguments at home and you lost. Finally, you made it to a real person. The problem is the computerized woman already wore you out. You weren’t ready for this type of advancement in technology. The company took you by surprise and defeated you before you were able to give them a piece of your mind. The computerized woman defeated another unsatisfied customer. Interpersonal communication is a thing of the past.
The real customer agent is up by seven runs and you are down to your last batter. They ask you what your problem is or why you haven’t paid your bill. You stand there and take the punishment. Finally, you are ready to let them have it or give them a piece of your mind. The problem is the phone discussion is over. The company used technology to defeat you before your war with them even began. Sometimes your call was just to get information about your account. By the time the conversation is over, you feel used because of all the personal questions the computerized woman asked you. Your wife doesn’t even ask you questions like this. This is unfair warfare. This is twenty-first century technology and you are still living in the twentieth century. Interpersonal communication is a thing of the past.
You were used to calling the phone company and getting a snappy woman who answered the phone. You both knew how to respect each other and your ways. You both felt satisfied after your call. You both felt like you got somewhere by the time you hung up your phones. The computerized woman took this all away from you. She took all your personal information from you and gave you nothing in return. Interpersonal communication is a thing of the past.
Next time you have a question or want to talk to somebody about your account, think again. The computerized woman is out there. She is always on the other end of the phone. She knows every single detail about you and your life. She is the one who takes all the personality out of your personal call. She is the new taste of technology that leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth. Today, she is on the other end of the telephone. Tomorrow, she will be taking care of your at one of the local hospitals or Doctor’s offices. The technology of today is two steps forwards and three steps back.
