The Dangers of using Salvia Divinorum – There are many physical and psychological inherent dangers associated with the use of Salvia Divinorum. These dangers are both immense and intense. The most prevalent danger is that it can lead to suicide. Salvia Divinorum is known as a semi-legal hallucinogenic. It is legal in every state except Louisiana and Missouri.
Salvia Divinorum can be smoked, chewed, or crushed and mixed in a drink. The most common use is by smoking it. The amount being smoked cannot be exact thus creating health issues. The long term use of Salvia Divinorum will have detrimental effects on the bronchial tubes and lungs, as well as, the brain, other organs and the central nervous system. Also, a concern and danger associated with salvia divinorum’s use is the possibility of overdose. It is compared to many other mind altering drugs such as LSD, PCP, Ecstasy, and mushrooms. The user does not realize how motor skills are also affected while under the influence and even after using this highly toxic “herb”. One of the most common adverse effects of using it is that it alters the mind so much that the user doesn’t realize what he/she is doing. The user can get violent and out of control. Users have hurt themselves and others while under the influence.
In one account a student in Oregon said he felt as if he had “an out-of-body experience in a totally different world followed by a bad high, in which he felt, sick, awkward, and couldn’t move”. Salvia divinorum gave him the euphoric high that made him very sick and then unable to move. The adverse affect here is the paralysis. Another user explained that it made him “feel like his soul was sucked out of him and coming off it made his feel as if needles were coming out of his body”.
The long term psychological effects are also adverse. A user’s self confidence greatly diminishes and mood changes are very common. Any type of emotional imbalance will definitely escalate after using salvia divinorum. Even panic attacks become more apparent after its use. It has been recorded that just a single use has caused direct thoughts of suicide. It severely and permanently damages the brain cells. Concentrating and even learning simple tasks become nonexistent because the brain cells have deteriorated. The brain’s ability to also communicate with the muscles decreases too so motor skills are severely and adversely affected.
In summary, there are a multitude of inherent dangers associated with the use of salvia divinorum. Some of these dangers leave long lasting effects on the entire body – both physical and psychological. Physical effects include loss of balance and coordination, uncontrollable muscle movement, nausea, sweating, vomiting, heart rate slowing down and even palpitations, migraines and dry mouth. Psychologically it affects the brain in a way that it alters any type of real thinking and understanding of what is happening to the user or the world around him/her. Another important danger associated with its use is the idea that since it is legal in most states and a natural herb that it is safe to use, but nothing is further from the truth. As with many legal and illegal substances, this legal “herb” which was first used by people in Oaxaca, Mexico is very dangerous both to one’s physical and psychological well being and these adverse affects can have long term consequences.
