The stars came out in a show of support for a very worthy cause to raise dollars for charity. President and Mrs. Barack Obama addressed the television audience expressing their support and urging Americans, as well, to lend a helping hand by making a donation. Queen Latifah emceed the venue at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and Ryan Seacrest hosted from the American Idol’s stage.
Captain Sully Sullenberger, the US Air pilot who safely landed his aircraft in the Hudson River and saved the lives of passengers and crew members invited viewers to give generously.
We traveled by video to areas in the U.S. and Africa that are distressed and the people are experiencing challenges of life on a day-to-day basis. First stop: Jennifer Garner took us to Appalachian, Kentucky, where poverty is a part of life. Victoria Beckham visited Eastern Kentucky and handed out books for the children.
Morgan Freeman and Randy J went to Mississippi, birthplace of Academy Award-winner Freeman. Physical activity and education were the focus.
Ellen met actor David Arquette at a California food bank to distribute food to working Americans. Feed America feeds 37 million Americans annually.
David Cook shared his experiences in Ethiopia, as we watched more video and got a glimpse of live in this African country. The goal in Ethiopia: save girls from early marriage, the sex trade, and teach them to read and write, for starters. Annie Lennox made a trip to Africa, too, and befriended a seven-year-old riddled with AIDS, who eventually got stronger and healthier with the right medications.
Douglas, Arizona is where Simon headed, to a rural area that for a time, had no pediatrician. Through contributions, Doctor Jon was brought in with a mobile unit, a doctors office on wheels, to reach the kids, I think they said about a thousand. And, one doctor. Doctor Jon. This is occurring in America.
There was humor injected into the seriousness of the evening as Wanda Sykes, dressed in white like the Idols, took the stage to get a few laughs about booting off the finalists. I saw some of the Idols relaxing a bit, but you couldn’t miss the tension at the start of the night on each one’s faces.
George Lopez was on hand, Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, (they have a new movie coming out) and I saw P Diddy
(Puff Daddy- I always have to ask my kids what name he’s going by this week) in the previews.
Comedian Jim Carrey, Slash, Tatiana de Toro, OctoMom, and Ben Affleck all raised their voices in support.
Performers showing support were: Carrie Underwood, singing “Change,” Sir Elton John,”Your Song,” Black Eyed Peas, “Rock That Body,” Jeff Beck and Joss Stone, “I Put a Spell on You,” Annie Lennox, “Universal Child,” Alicia Keys, “Unthinkable,” and “Empire State of Mind,” and Mary J. Blige, was with her star-studded band, guitarists Vai and Orianthi, Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker, and Randy J on bass. She covered Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven.”
Annie Lennox appeared by video, unable to come due to the Icelandic volcano.
Hasta La Vista, Baby!
Ryan called them in pairs. Crystal and Casey. Aaron and Lee. Crystal and Lee were safe. Relief! They get to enjoy the rest of the show. Casey and Aaron were sweating it out on the stools. Elimination in their minds.
Ryan summons the final three. Siobhan, Mike and Tim. Siobhan gets a pass to safety first. Close call. Siobhan knows she hasn’t been on for at least two weeks. Big Mike, Casey, Aaron go to the couches. Safe.Tim got the lowest number of votes. Teflon Tim tumbles, his time had come.
Tim was a gracious finalist, smiling as we watched a video of his time on American Idol. He has the look, the talent and the experience to find great songs, and record hits. He will do well and I know we will be seeing Tim Urban again soon, on the cover of a debut album.
Next Idol Week
We are down to six finalists, now. I heard TV Guide reported that next week, country songstress Shania Twain will be in the house as mentor and they will be singing her songs. There are six more weeks left and the competition is getting tight. Each week means the contestants will have to step it up just a little higher. Who can do it? Who will rise and who will fall? See you next week when Idols sing Shania, and we get closer to selecting the new American Idol.
