Three years ago we remodeled our kitchen and dining room. We installed brand new lighting fixtures by Kichler in our kitchen, dining area, hall and bathroom. I figured while the electrician was there, I’d have him do all I wanted done!
I forgot to replace the old globe style flush mounted ceiling light fixture in our entry way and laundry room, and have been looking for a nice fixture that matches my other lighting ever since. I found exactly what I wanted at Home Depot last week!
This light fixture is made by Hunter, and has two possible functions. It can be installed on the ceiling, or it can be attached to the Hunter ceiling fan. The fan that it compliments is white, and this fixture comes with both the brushed nickel and white hardware.
The model number is 28550, and although this is sold at Home Depot, I could not find this at the Hunter lighting website. The glass globe measures 12″ in diameter, and is made of an opaque (almost opal) white swirled marble glass. It takes two 60 watt light bulbs, (this is the max), the bulbs are not included.
It’s not often that I stumble on a product that matches another brand’s lighting fixtures. In my case, I had installed expensive Kichler lights with brushed nickel hardware, and this globe, made by Hunter, was almost identical to the Kichler style! And it was just under $40, so it was a great buy.
I was a bit concerned about the shape of our ceiling when we removed the 23 year old light fixture. It was completely flush against the ceiling, and I knew there would be a ring on the ceiling when it came down. We had this problem with the kitchen and hall lights that were removed – but since we were remodeling we were already in the mess and could spackle the ceiling and then paint over it.
Just as I feared, the ring appeared, with a slight indentation into the sheetrock. The salesperson at Home Depot told me that the Hunter light fixture would sit flush against my ceiling – (I told him that I was concerned about covering up the ring). Well, he was wrong, this is not exactly a flush fixture, but it is very close.
Luckily for us, the Hunter light fixture is 12″ in diameter and what we took down was only about 9″ in diameter, so even though this didn’t rest flush against the ceiling, it covered up the ring. This time around, I just sprayed some Homax Spray Texture over the area, and painted over it. We did have some paint from the last time we painted this room, so I was able to touch up the ceiling with the same color paint, but it wouldn’t have shown anyway. It just made me feel better knowing the problem was mostly fixed.
Installation was easy. I am not comfortable doing electrical installations, but I watched and helped my husband, and the directions were clear and easy to follow. He had the fixture itself up in about 10 minutes. Once that was installed, it was a matter of putting the beautiful globe over the screw, and screwing the brushed nickel finial in place to hold the globe securely. The globe rests about 1″ down from the ceiling and looks perfect! The finial reminds me of the shape of a chess piece, the pawn.
If you wanted to install this fixture onto a ceiling fan, there is a pull chain that comes out of the screw, and one of the finials has a hole that it slips through. Since we weren’t interested in using it in this fashion, we took a wire cutters and cut the chain off flush with the screw. If you do need to install this on a Hunter fan, you can only install it on Hunter fans type A-Z.
This light fixture was packaged very securely, with styrofoam and cardboard meant to protect it from breaking, I was impressed! I love this light, and will consider buying more Hunter lighting fixtures in the future. The box reads that the Hunter Company is committed to excellence, and that they were started in 1886 by John Hunter and his sons. That’s quite a long tradition.
I used two of my new energy saver fluorescent light bulbs in this fixture. Each bulb gives off 60 watts of energy but only uses 14 watts. And they give off just as much light as my old incandescent light bulbs did.
I am extremely happy with my Hunter Swirled Marble light fixture!
