Working in a pharmacy, it is very important that I know how to make my patient’s lives easier. When patients are traveling or getting ready to travel there are many things that a pharmacy and that patient can do to make things easier.
If you must or chose to travel on the plane with a medication bottle there are many ways to make this easier. Before you leave for your destination ask your pharmacy to give you a bottle with a label on it. This should not be a problem and only takes a very moments of time. You can then only put enough pills in this second bottle that is required for your stay away. This will prevent losing the rest of your medication if something shall happen to your bottle. Often the pharmacy will hand you the smallest vial they have and therefore reduce the amount of space your medication might otherwise take up.
Super chain pharmacies
If you are traveling within the country then using a super chain pharmacy can be very helpful. Some big pharmacy chains, such as Walgreens, have multiple locations throughout the country. Walgreens pharmacies can look up your information on their computer screen no matter where you are and where you originally fill your medication. This will eliminate the need to pack your medication altogether which will give you more room and also give you less headaches from the security at the airport.
Many times the biggest problem may be your insurance. If you are leaving the country or are going to be away for an extended amount of time then you may wish to get a bigger supply of medication then you normally fill. You may also find it necessary to fill your prescription before it is due to be refilled. With these situations you insurance company may question the ‘abnormal activity’. Your pharmacy can call your plan and explain the situation. Some companies, not all, will offer the pharmacy an override to get the medication covered. The only way to know for sure if your insurance company allows this is to ask your local pharmacy to give them a call. Your pharmacy should be more then happy to help you.
There are many ways you can rely on your pharmacy to make your vacation go smoother. Whether it is giving you an extra bottle or calling your insurance company, your pharmacy can be a great alley when traveling with medications. If you feel like these options are not for you then partnering with a super chain that can access you information from anywhere may be just what you need. Your pharmacy is not only there for you when you are sick or on an everyday basis, but they can also be there when you travel. Do not be afraid to ask your pharmacy to make traveling easier.
