A study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that the catechins abundant in green tea help to speed up fat burning – when combined with exercise. Researchers gave 132 obese adults a drink containing 625 milligrams of catechins, like those in green tea, in combination with 39 milligrams of caffeine.
After three months of sipping this “green tea” beverage daily and exercising a total of three hours a week, the catechin sipping group lost significantly more weight (4.4 pounds vs. 2 pounds) compared to the group who sipped a beverage containing only the same amount of caffeine. Not only did the group who drank the catechin-containing beverage lose more weight, they also lost more abdominal fat. Good news if you’re trying to pare down a pot belly.
Take a Fat Burning Walk with Green Tea
This study shows that the catechins in green tea have an effect on fat burning that’s independent of caffeine. Some small studies show that the combination of caffeine and green tea act synergistically to burn more fat than either used alone. Many fitness experts believe that drinking a cup or two or green tea before exercising increases the rate of fat burn.
Green Tea for Fat Burning: How Does It Work?
Two fat burning hormones produced with exercise, epinephrine and norepinephrine, may play a role in green tea’s ability to burn fat. Normally, these hormones rise transiently during exercise, which stimulates fat burning, to provide fuel for the hardworking muscles. Then, levels drop which reduces the rate of fat that’s mobilized from body fat stores. The catechins in green tea delay the breakdown of these fat burning hormones so that fat breakdown occurs at a higher rate for a longer period of time.
Green Tea for Fat Burning: The Bottom Line?
Drinking a cup or two of green tea could turn an ordinary stroll into a fat burning walk. The effect may be modest, but over time, the benefits add up. If you’re not sensitive to caffeine, try sipping a cup of green tea before your next fitness walk.
