How to Text Message Without a Cell Phone

by itchy fish

Technology has advanced to the point that you no longer need a cell phone to send text messages. In this article you will learn how to text without a phone and connect with family and friends absolutely free. There is no cost to send a text from your computer and it is very simple to do.

Why would you need to send a text from your computer? Perhaps you’ve lost your cell phone, or the battery has died. Maybe you’re past due on your cell phone bill or cannot afford the monthly cost associated with owning your own phone. Whatever the reason, it’s nice to know that you can text without a phone for free. There are two options to choose from when learning how to text from a computer.

Send a text through email

If you have an email account, you can use it to send and receive text messages. Here’s how to text without a phone using your email account.

STEP 1 – Log in to your email account.

IMPORTANT NOTE – You will need to know the service provider for the person you will be texting. You cannot send a text without a phone, regardless of the method you use, unless you know who provides service.

STEP 2 – Begin composing a new email. In the ‘To‘ field, you will enter the phone number of the person you wish to text. Do not space or include hyphens. Simply enter the number. (for example 5552221234) Immediately behind the phone number, you will enter the information for the cell phone provider. Listed below are the addresses that should be used for common service providers. Thus, in the ‘To‘ field, the address should read something similar to: 5552221234@txt.att.net. (If an email address associated with a specific service provider is not listed below, it can typically be found on the company website)

AT&T : @txt.att.net

Alltel: @message.alltel.com

CellularOne: @mobile.celloneusa.com

Nextel: @messaging.nextel.com

Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com

T-Mobile: @tmomail.net

Verizon: @vtext.com

Virgin Mobile: @vmobl.com

STEP 3 – Enter the text you want to send in the same place you would compose an email. When you’re done, hit send. Your name will appear on the text and the recipient will be able to reply to your text. The reply will arrive in your inbox.

Send a text via text messaging websites

There are several websites that offer free text messaging services. While these sites do provide a way to text without a phone, be careful with the sites you choose to use. Read the fine print and terms of service to ensure that the service is FREE, and that no one, including the recipient, will be charged a fee.

To use these sites, you will need to know the service provider of the person you are texting. Then, enter the cell phone number and select the service provider from a pull down menu. Type in your message and send. Be sure to include your name and contact information since most text messaging websites will appear as ‘unknown’ on caller-ID displays.

Sending a text through email is arguably a much safer option when learning how to text without a phone. However, if you do not have an email account, text messaging websites provide a way to text from your computer.
