Before you start judging whether or not your boyfriend is smart enough for you, you must recognize the fact that there are different kinds of intelligence, and decide which kind is most important to you. In order to do this, you must first take a look at yourself, your character, your likes and dislikes and your priorities.
If you are the scholarly type, you will probably be attracted to the man who is very intellectual. He will score well above average on an IQ test and have a great fund of general knowledge. He probably loves to read, watches documentaries on TV and likes to discuss world affairs and abstract matters.
On the negative side, he is won’t know to fix your car, change the washer in a tap, or clean out the eaves troughs, and he won’t have the slightest interest in learning to do any of these mundane tasks. After a few firm reminders, he can probably be persuaded to pay someone else to do the necessary jobs around the house.
If you decide to marry this person, you will always have an interesting companion, who lives mainly in the mental realm. He will be happy and content as long as you reside there with him.
If you are a natural homemaker who loves children, takes pride in her home, and loves all the housewifely arts, you should look for a man who is clever with his hands. This type of man can fix just about anything that breaks down. He knows how furnaces, air conditioners and washers work. He may not have read the instruction manuals; he just seems to know by instinct.
If you marry this man, you will seldom need to call a repair man or a mechanic; your husband will have everything working perfectly before breakfast. Then he may start in on remodeling the recreation room.
He won’t want to accompany you to the opera, or an art gallery, but if you keep him busy with jobs to do, he’ll be quite content.
If you’re not really the intellectual type, and housekeeping doesn’t overly excite you, you may be a sports enthusiast. You probably played on a team or two in your younger years and you still follow the professional teams in several sports closely. You watch all the playoff games on TV and may have a season ticket to the games of your favorite team in your hometown. You probably picked up the interest in sports from your family, who introduced you to the games when you were very young.
Of course, you will look for another ardent sports fan. If he can quote the scores in all the playoff games in your favorite sport since 1970, you’ll be sure you’ve found Mr. Wonderful. His type of intelligence is just what you’ve been looking for.
Neither of you will care if the taps drip, the muffler is falling off the car, or the eaves troughs are completely clogged. All that “stuff” can wait until the big game is over.
All of these men are smart, but in different ways. Before you can judge their intelligence, or lack of it, you have to know yourself. What type of intelligence is important to you? Which type will you be able to endure for the long term? Only then will you be able to accurately gauge the intelligence, or lack thereof, of your current boyfriend. In the final analysis, it is a very subjective matter.
