How to like vegetables as an adult (or at any age). It’s not a question that most people ask. If they don’t want to eat them, they probably wont be concerned. However, it is important to your health and we are hearing more and more about how we need to include them in our diets.
I’m 41 and I was just told that I have some heart problems. The first thing the doctor said was that I needed to start eating healthier. My first thought was cutting out this and that, but his response was “you need to eat a lot of vegetables and fruits”. Actually he said, “mostly vegetables.”
There are so many benefits to eating vegetables as a child and an adult. First of all you will start keeping other food cravings at bay. Second of all you will lose unwanted fat. Now I’m not saying that you should “only” eat vegetables, because you need other types of food in your diet, but you should eat a serving of fruit at least for breakfast and eat vegetables with your other meals. For snacks you can even try celery and a little bit of almond butter. Almond butter is better for you than peanut butter, but if you really can’t do it, even peanut butter is better than nothing, if it’s getting you to eat the celery.
You should try to stay away from a lot of salt when preparing your vegetables. Even if we didn’t add salt to anything, your body still would not be lacking. My doctor told me that at my last visit. There is plenty of salt added to most of our food before we get it according to him. This is especially true if you eat any canned foods. Now if your doctor says you can add salt then that is fine. The important thing is not adding too much.
Get some baby carrots. Even if you don’t care for them that much at first, you will acquire a taste for them. You actually start wanting them for a snack after awhile.
Now this article is supposed to be about vegetables, but I want to throw in apples too. They are really good for you and it wont hurt you to have one or two a day. Bananas are great too if you want to have one cut up I your cereal or just have a banana and a handful of nuts in the morning.
The way I started to learn liking salads is buying the shredded lettuce. I mixed it with raisins, nuts, sesame seeds, shredded carrots, a tiny amount of bacon bits and a few other things that I liked. You’d be surprised at how much it changes the flavor and will actually make your body start to crave it.
The reason I went for the shredded lettuce is I can’t stand the bulkiness of the other type of salads. Trying to shove all that in my mouth was just to much and too messy for me. The shredded lettuce is just as good for you and you can eat it a lot easier.
If you’re going to start eating salad try dipping your fork in the dressing on the side before scooping up the salad. This will cut down on fatty calories and you’ll still get the dressing with every bite.
Another great thing you can do is put vegetables in your soups. There is no limit to adding vegetables to your foods. There are all kinds of vegetable recipes on the Internet. Look for one that looks good and try it.
You will be surprised at how your body will react. They may not be as bad as you thought.
