If you are a cat lover you have probably had more than one kitten in your home from time to time that was infested with fleas. I know I have. It is really sad to see a small kitten covered with fleas and not know how to rid them of these pests. You see, it is not advisable to put strong commercial flea medication on a small kitten. If you read the product labels on most commercial flea medications you will see that you have to wait until the kitten is 8 weeks old and weighs 1 to 9 lbs. before you can use the medicine.
Flea infestations are bad news for your cat, not to mention a small kitten. Fleas can infect your pet with parasites, viruses and bacteria. Cats and kittens can be infected with hook worms and tape worms because of fleas. So what is a cat lover to do when they bring home a new kitten and discover it is crawling with fleas? Well, I want to share what I do now when I get a new kitten that needs to be rid of fleas.
I happen to love Siamese cats and kittens. I’m a sucker for one if one of my friends finds a stray or abandoned kitten. Once I had a friend bring me a beautiful abandoned part Siamese kitten that was only about 3 weeks old. The poor thing had been abandoned and was covered with fleas. I couldn’t put commercial flea medication on it and was afraid if I gave it a bath that it would catch a cold, being that it was winter. I tried picking off the fleas by hand, but that was a lesson in futility. At this point I was talking about my new kitten and the flea control dilemma I was facing with a friend. She told me to try Avon Skin So Soft.
Turns out that Avon Skin So Soft is a popular bath oil that also works wonders as a flea repellent too. Who would have thought? Not only does it repel fleas, it kills them. My friend advised me to soak a cotton ball with Avon SSS and wipe my new kitten down with it. I followed my friend’s advice and was amazed as I watched the fleas die almost instantly as I wiped my kitty down with the soaked cotton ball. Soon my kitten was flea free and smelling nice too. The oil in this product has a way of smothering the fleas. You can add a capfull of the Skin So Soft to bath water if you have a larger kitten and feel it is OK to bathe it. This product is a safe alternative to rid fleas from small puppies as well. Pets that are allergic to commercial flea control products can be kept flea free by spraying them weekly with a mixture of 1 part Skin So Soft and 5 parts water mixed in a spray bottle as well. Any time I get a new kitten I always turn to this safe alternative to rid my new little friend of fleas.
