In a tough economy there are some ways we can save a little cash now and again by recycling. In this case, we can recycle those old pantyhose and knee high stockings with a run in them.
If you have children, they can grow “hair” on a pantyhose head. Cut the foot off one of your old knee highs. Drop a couple of teaspoons full of grass seed down in the bottom of the toe. Then pour approximately 1 to 2 cups of dirt in it. Try to keep the grass seed from moving. Take a small rubber band or a piece of strong thread and tie off the bottom. You then need to take another small rubber band or piece of thread and pinch a section of the dirt about halfway down the pantyhose to form a nose. Tie it off also. Let your children make a face on it now using buttons, markers, felt or anything else you have around. Get a small bowl or maybe a large, plastic lid from a spray container and fill it with water. Let the bottom of the “head” sit down in the water. In about a week, their head will have nice green hair.
Halloween will be here before you know it and your child may need some wings for their costume. Get some 14 or 16 gauge wire and form a figure 8 to start. Then adjust it to the shape you want for your wings. Twist the ends in the center and wrap them with masking tape, or duct tape if you have it. Cut the legs off a pair of old pantyhose and slip one leg over each side of the wing. You can make the pantyhose take the shape of the wings by using a needle and thread to attach the pantyhose to the shape of the wings. Tie the pantyhose or tape them to the center of the wings. Now cut two pieces of elastic about 30″ long. Tie all four ends around the center, making two loops to fit over the child’s arms.
On a more practical side, old pantyhose have so many uses around the house that you will get excited when you see a run in your hose. Have you ever lost an earring, contact lens or other small item? Cut the foot off an old pair of hose and slip it over the end of the hose of your vacuum. Secure it with a rubber band and vacuum away. Your precious, lost item will get picked up with the suction from the vacuum but will not be sucked into the hose. Instead, it will be stopped by the pantyhose.
The man at the airport with a rag cannot get your shoes any shinier than you can with a strip of old pantyhose. You can just buff away with a length of pantyhose for a great shine.
Do you have an unruly assortment of gift wrap? Cut the leg off your old pantyhose and slip it over the roll of wrapping paper. Push it down until it is all the way down into the toe. It keeps the paper wound on the tube and clean. This works for leftover wallpaper also.
Fill a section of pantyhose with mothballs to hang in the closet with your winter clothes or fill one with lavender for a fresh smell in the closet or drawer.
Cut strips of pantyhose and use them to tie up your plants. You could try lining a flower pot with an old piece of pantyhose. The water will drain to the drain tray but you won’t get any dirt running out.
Do you hand wash your sweaters and hang them up to dry? Try slipping a pair of pantyhose through the arms of your sweater. You can then put the clothes pins on the pantyhose so you don’t get marks on your sweaters. Use your old pantyhose to scrub the sink, tub or pots and pans or stuff that toy or pillow that is losing its fluff. The list goes on; so, recycle your old pantyhose and knee highs. I know you find a use for them!
