How to Register the Birth of a Child in Poland

by itchyfish

According to Polish authorities, the birth of a child in Poland needs to be registered within two weeks of birth. The hospital where the birth took place can advise you on the most appropriate Registry Office to register the birth of your child.

Children with a Claim to British Nationality

Children born in Poland with a claim to British nationality are entitled to a Consular birth registration at birth, which will give them a British-style birth certificate. Parents who would like to register their child, should do so as quickly as possible following birth.

Consular registration is not compulsory, but it does provide proof of citizenship of the child. It also ensures that there is a permanent record of the birth in the General Register Office in the UK, and will be included along with the birth of British-born children in the UK.

Registering the Birth in Poland

When registering the birth of a child abroad in Poland, the mother and father should complete and submit the Birth Registration Form, which requires each parent’s full British birth certificate, passport information, and details on the parents’ nationality, and marriage details. The child’s full Polish birth certificate is also required when registering a birth in Poland. The parents must also pay all applicable registration fees for the birth of their child.

Children Born Out of Wedlock

According to The British Embassy in Warsaw, an unmarried mother can automatically transmit her citizenship to her child born outside the UK on or after 1 January 1983. However, an unmarried father cannot transmit his citizenship to his children born after 1 July 2006 unless the child is subsequently legitimated.

Copies of Certificates

If you require copies of original British documents such as certificates, click on the UK Statistics Authority Web site for more information.
