Have you ever wanted to try to make your own nail polish colors? Do you have a color you wish had some sparkle to it? Or a color that you think would look good mixed with another color? If you answered yes, it’s not too hard to make your dream a reality.
Creating your own nail polish colors is simple and effective, as long as you have the right tools. Here are some tips and a little advice on how to create your own custom nail polish colors.
It’s easy to turn a non sparkly color into a shining beauty. All you have to do is add glitter! It really is that simple. With that said, there are a few precautions you should take before adding glitter to your nail polishes. Glitter works best when added to a nail polish that already has some color in it. Adding glitter to plain clear polishes sounds like a good idea, but chances are, the nail polish is not thick enough to keep the glitter suspended and it will sink to the bottom. Instead choose a nail polish that already has some glitter in it, or a polish that is sheer or shimmery. The binders in colored polishes will be better suited to hold your glitter in place.
Also, certain types of glitter might melt or change color when added to nail polish. Make sure you choose a glitter that is poly based, as these tend to hold up very well inside of nail polish.
In order to keep your glitter and polish mixed well, it’s a good idea to add a couple of small balls in with your polish. The balls will help blend the mixture when you shake it. You can use small stainless steel 1/8″ balls which can be found at most craft stores. Metal BBs (the kind you use for BB guns) will also work. Make sure they are stainless steel as copper balls will oxidize inside of your polish.
To make the polish, start by adding small amounts of glitter to your base polish and mixing well. You can keep adding glitter and mixing until you reach your desired glitter density. A low density of glitter will provide a subtle sparkle while a higher density will create a thicker coat of glitter on the nails.
Creating Your Own Colors
If you want to start from scratch and create your own custom color you can’t easily do that as well. All you need is some clear nail polish, stainless steel balls, and some colored pigments.
Follow the same rules as making glitter polish, adding small amounts of pigment and mixing until your desired color is reached.
Creating “Frankenstein” Colors
If you want to make your own custom color using colors you already have, that is also possible. You will need to make sure you have room in the bottle before you pour the other nail polish colors into it to avoid overflowing. Otherwise the rules are the same. Start with your base color and two metal balls and slowly pour in any color you wish to mix with it. Keep adding colors and mixing it up until you reach your desired color.
Custom nail colors may settle or separate if left sitting for too long. It might take a little extra elbow grease and shaking power to use them, but if done correctly, they will be very usable colors created by you. You can even give them their own custom names.
