There are so many cute outfits out there for dolls. They range from simple shorts and a shirt to extravagant dresses. Every little girl wants her doll to be dressed pretty. But sometimes we just don’t have the money to spend on new clothing for dolls, especially when the people in the house need to eat. Well there is a simple way to make a beautiful dolls dress at little to no cost to you. You can use a little bit of sewing to turn one of your old crocheted doilies into a lacy dress!
There are many ways you could do this; all depend on your skill level. I’m going to show you how to sew a quick and simple dress that even a beginner can do.
What you will need:
Cloth the same size as doily (can be same color or contrasting)
When choosing you doily make sure that it will fit the doll. To do this fold the in half twice. The tip of this triangle shape will be removed, enough to fit over the doll’s hips and around the chest so make sure that with this removed you have enough length left for the rest of the doll. I like it to reach the doll’s knees, but you can make it longer or shorter if desired.
You may also desire to choose ribbon according to the size of the doll, thinner ribbon for smaller dolls and wider ribbon for larger dolls.
First cut the cloth to the same size as the doily. Then hem the edges with a sewing machine, or if use like you can use fusible webbing, hem tape or fabric glue.
Second, measure around the dolls chest. Putting the right side of the doily against the wrong side of the cloth, draw a circle in the center of the doily/cloth and sew around along the line, sewing both pieces together at the same time. Cut out the center of the hole about ½” from the sewn line. Turn inside out.
Next measure from armpits to waist line. On the inside of the dress, draw a line around the cloth that is the same distance as the measurement above. If you like you can choose to make the body of the dress higher or lower than the waist. Higher will create an empire waistline, and lower will settle around the hips.
Third, sew around the line using a gather stitch (larger stitch length). Measure around the waist (or the area the line of the body will fall). Gather so that it is a little bigger than area. Make sure if the dolls hips are larger (like a Barbie) that it will fit over the hips.
Next cut a piece of ribbon that will fit around the waist area and allow for you to tie a bow. Sew the piece of ribbon around the gathered area, leaving ½” to 1″ in the back. This will allow for you to tighten around the waist because the gathered area is a little bigger than the waist.
Fifth, you need to make arm straps. Using more ribbon you can put the dress on the doll and measure/pin the straps into place, be sure to leave extra on each end of the ribbon so that you can sew, fuse or glue the straps into place. Make sure the straps are close enough to the shoulders and long enough that they can be pulled down off the arms. Once your straps are sewn on your dress is complete!
However, if you desire, you can also embellish the dress with embroidery, silk flowers, beads, sequins, more ribbon, anything you may find in the craft isle, or in your scrap craft bag. No matter what you choose to do – embellish or leave as it is the dress is a pretty little lacy dress your child is bound to love.
