The thing about iPod holders is that they come in a variety of colors, styles and patterns and that there is a suitable holder for most any man, woman or child. The other thing about iPod holders is that they cost money that you simply don’t need to spend. Of course, you can go out and buy one if that’s what you want – that’s your decision. However, if you’d rather spend that money on something else, then you might like to know that you probably already have an iPod holder! That is, if you have an old pair of blue jeans at home you have what you need to make a nice iPod holder that’s suitable for guys, women and kids alike. It’s not hard to make the device carrier which works to hold cell phones and similar items as well.
Cut the back pocket off of a pair of adult jeans. As you do, cut the jeans, too, just under the pocket. The pocket itself, as well as the underlying denim, will become the new device holder. Don’t worry about how neatly you cut the material for now; just don’t cut into the pocket itself. After removing the denim you can then trim around it to make it appear much neater. If you want, you can treat the fabric with a no-fray solution found at craft stores and fabric stores. The liquid is applied to the cut areas of the material to prevent fraying as the item is laundered over time.
Now cut the mini pocket from the front of the same pair of jeans. This little pocket is found lying partially behind one of the regular front pockets. Cut it out – but not the underlying denim behind it – and use it to make the flat which holds the device carrier closed. As with the larger pocket you can treat this pocket with a no-fray solution. Simply follow the directions on the bottle to do so.
Lay the small pocket halfway onto the large pocket to see how wide the small one is against the large one. Make a mark on each side of the small pocket. Draw the marks at the very top of the large pocket. This will give you a guide as to where to make the folds in the large pocket. Set the small pocket aside for the moment and fold the large pocket where the marks are. Fold the sides to the back then use fabric glue to secure. Although you can use hot glue to hold the denim this version is not washable or will eventually fall apart in the wash. To get the glue to grab the denim it can be helpful to put a brick or a book on top of the pocket until the glue dries.
After the glue of the large pocket has dried you’ll then work with the small pocket. First, take a Velcro dot or square and attach it to the backside, near the bottom of the pocket. You can use adhesive or non-adhesive Velcro, but either way, it’s recommended that you also use the fabric glue to attach it. The adhesive Velcro will stick for awhile but tends to pull away from the denim after using it a few times. Now glue the straight end of the small pocket to the straight end of the large pocket. Turn the large pocket so that the straight side, or top of the pocket, is facing you. Turn the small pocket so that the flat side, or top of the pocket, is facing away from you. Add the glue to the large pocket then position the small pocket so that it is glued to the straight side of the large pocket. This small pocket now flips over the open area of the pocket to make a flap that will hold the device inside the carrier. Simply fold the small pocket over, mark the place where the Velcro dot meets the main pocket, then add the other Velcro dot or square.
Make sure that, before starting this project, you lay your device on the large pocket to see how wide you’ll need to make the carrier. Be sure to leave a small amount of space on each side of the device, as you’re measuring, to allow room for sliding the device in and out of the finished carrier. Although the basic design is complete you can add embellishments to individualize the holder. Fake jewels, sequin, buttons, paint markers, rubber stamping or even glue-on appliques can all be used to make the denim holder into the design you want. It’s always a lot of fun to make things yourself, and when you do, you save money as well as create a one-of-a-kind item. Everyone will want to know where you got your fabulous iPod holder and now it’ll be up to you to decide if you tell them or not!
