When summer heat gets to the point of bringing on a heat wave, we know that we have to watch out for our own health. We take special precautions to make sure that we don’t have a heat stroke or other weather related health problems. If you have pets, it is your job to make sure they are safe during heat wave weather as well. There are some precautions you can take to make sure your pet doesn’t get ill from the extreme heat conditions of a heat wave.
How to keep your pets safe during a heat wave:
Availability of Water- Make sure that your pet has enough water. That is something that you have to do at all times, not just during heat wave weather. It is especially important when extreme heat hits your area for an extended period of time. Make sure your pet is able to stay hydrated. Consider putting more than one bowl of water out during this extreme heat so that your pet doesn’t run out of water. He/she is likely to drink excessive amounts of water when the heat is too much to bear.
Shady Areas- If your pet is going to be outside for a long period of time while there is a heat wave, make sure that they are near an area that they can get enough shade. He/she will need to find refuge in these shaded areas. Shady areas will allow your pet to stay cool. Don’t tie your pet to an area that is known to have the sun beating down on it all day long.
Keep Inside- Keep your pet inside during a heat wave. Heat waves are brutal on the body. It isn’t just hot when there is a heat wave. It is also very dry and smothering. Keep your pet safe during a heat wave by keeping him/her indoors where there is air conditioning to keep him/her from becoming overwhelmed by the heat.
Swimming- Depending on the type of pet that you have, you can take the pet swimming for a while during heat wave weather. This will give the pet a chance to cool down a bit. A creek or pond should do the trick. Find one that is under a lot of shade trees though. Being near the water is always cooler than any other place.
Minimal Exercise- Do not take your pets for a walk or run when there is a heat wave in progress. If you must, keep the exercise to a minimum so that your pet doesn’t get overheated and suffer from heat exhaustion. This includes playing ball or Frisbee as well. If you want to exercise your pet, wait until the sun is going down so that it is a little bit cooler out for both of you. You can resume your normal exercise routine with your pet when the heat wave begins to subside.
Take as good care of your pets as you do of yourself when there is heat wave weather. Heat waves can kill pets as easily as it can kill humans. We have a tendency to forget that our animals need special care when extreme weather hits. If you want to make sure your pet is around for a long time, take the time to take care of them. Your pets give you too much joy to leave them out in heat wave weather without protection.
