How to Find Happiness in Your Life

by itchy fish

What matters most to you in life? Whatever it is the direct outcome of that which matters most to you is undoubtedly happiness. . Happiness is something that all of us want and search for on a day to day minute to minute basis. Unfortunately happiness is very difficult to achieve, and takes consistent effort and focus. All of us have felt feelings of sadness and social isolation on the emotional roller-coaster that is life. The good news is that you are totally capable of being happy and that the bad times always end. Here is some advice to increase happiness in your life.

Don’t compare yourself to others

It’s easy to do and at one point in time all of us have done it. It is absolutely crucial that you don’t compare yourself to other people or you will get caught up in a never ending struggle every day that can never be won. In reality there is no one in the world you can compare yourself with. Since everyone has different characteristics and experience there is no basis for comparison. Also you only see the tip of the iceberg of what someone is truly like when you meet them. You may see a couple loving each other, but never know that they fight all the time behind close doors. It is also entirely possible that they are faking that they are happy and doing well when they are not. People rarely talk about their problems and pain with people other than very close loved ones. People are complex social animals and we have the ability to act however we want despite how we may be feeling. Shakespeare said it best in his famous quote “All the World’s a stage”.

Be aware of the Media

Be conscious that most of the media in today’s world is fake, filtered, and highly edited. Anything presented with a purpose is considered as media and this can range from the obvious TV stations, movies, and magazines to the not so obvious blog pages, music, and Facebook. Media is designed to make money and will always present material to generate cash with a certain strategy. Most of the time this means creating false images of reality in order to set an artificial standard for people to try and reach. I myself am a marketing major so I can say this with confidence. Everything that you ever see in the media is never raw and is either shot in a certain way or edited to give a particular slant on a situation. Therefore to judge yourself or what the standards are based off of any type of media is to judge based off of a lie.

Negative feelings are normal

In the effort to try to bring more happiness into your life you also have to acknowledge that feeling bad some of the time is a normal part of human life. If you never felt bad you would have nothing to compare the good times to and would never know what it feels like to be truly happy. Keep in mind that the bad times will pass, and don’t linger on them to long.

Get involved

I find that one of the best ways to keep myself happy is to regularly exercise. Not only is this a great way to relieve stress but it also improves your health while increasing endorphins to the brain that make you feel happier. Get involved and start doing things with other people that you are interested in like joining a club, taking a class on a certain subject, doing yoga, or volunteering for a cause. Volunteering can be an especially good way to improve your happiness as helping those that are less fortunate can put things in perspective and is also a good way to create social interaction.
