The top rated television shows must have decent decorating budgets these days, because several popular shows are sporting some fabulous set decor in their houses. From ABC comedy hits like Modern Family and Cougar Town to the family drama Brothers and Sisters, here are some decorating style tips straight from your favorite TV homes.
Cougar Town. This ABC comedy about a 40-something Florida divorcee features lead character Jules (Courtney Cox) and her awesome, beachy pad. CasaSugar has an entire spread decorated to the Cougar Town house set, including the secret to Jules’ fun bar stools (plain stools slip covered with Thomas Paul fabric) and Jules’ dining set with wicker chairs (from Crate and Barrel).
How to get the look: Most of the items in the Cougar Town house appear to be from stores like Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn and Anthropologie. Go for beach-themed accessories and textured items like wicker chairs, rattan placemats and a basket weave headboard. Mix with fun floral fabrics- and it can’t hurt to add a seashell or two.
Modern Family. This hilarious show features three great homes: the Pritchett’s, the Dunphy’s and the Pritchett-Tucker’s. One of the most sought out items from the Dunphy’s house is the blue paint color in the hallway, and in a photo spread in People Magazine (April 5, 2010) the color was revealed to be Labrador Blue by Benjamin Moore. In fact according to People, all of the show’s featured paint colors are from Benjamin Moore, including the crimson color in Jay and Gloria Pritchett’s modern home (Currant Red) and the neutral grey-green in Mitchell and Cam’s house (Louisburg Green).
How to get the look: Love those floral brown and green floral pillows on the Dunphy’s family room couch? The fabric is brown Marimekko Kuusama. Similar pillows can be found online at Imagine Throw Pillows. Look for animal prints like a zebra lamp shade or a leopard print pillow to emulate Jay and Gloria Pritchett’s mod décor. One thing I haven’t been able to track down? The highly sought after striped pillows on the Dunphy’s living room couch- but they look suspiciously Pottery Barn to me.
Brothers and Sisters. The kitchen is the crowning jewel in the home of this show’s matriarch, Nora Walker (Sally Field). Nora Walker’s airy kitchen features a huge island with crisp white cabinets and a sparkling subway tile backsplash. Woven grass wallpaper adorns the walls throughout the house.
How to Get the look: Apartment Therapy has some great tips for recreating the Walker family house décor, including the metal shelf in Nora’s kitchen (from IKEA) and the textured wall covering (grass cloth by the yard from Twenty2). Also, to mimic Nora’s entryway, hang framed family photos all the way up the walls of your staircase (the frames don’t have to match- in fact, they shouldn’t). Mix a dark dining room table with light upholstered fabric chairs. Use apothecary jars in the kitchen as canisters. And, if you really want to be like the Walker’s, make sure the fridge is always stocked with an endless supply of white wine.
