WPS is the file format for the Microsoft Works word processor program. Word is another word processor by Microsoft. Mac computers are capable of opening and viewing a wide range of file formats including text and word document files. However if you want to open a WPS file in either Works or Pages (Mac word processor) you’ll need to convert it before opening it and changing it to a Word file.
Download a free converter to convert the WPS file into a compatible Word DOC file. Links to multiple converters can be found in the Resources section at the end of this article. The first link is ideal for users exclusively on a Mac system as it is a web based converter and thus does not require a file download.
Click on “Browse” within the converter and locate the WPS file you want to convert. Choose the file type to convert to as “.doc” or “Word.” Click on “OK” or “Convert” and choose a location such as your computer Desktop to save the file to.
Click on the “Apple Pages” icon in the dock or on your desktop. Click on “File” and select “Open.”
Locate the recently converted file and select it. Wait for the file to open in Pages and click “OK” or “Dismiss” if a pop up window appears with errors in the document.
Click on “File” again and select “Export” from the list of options. Choose “Word doc” from the options and click “Next.”
Name the file and choose a folder or desktop location to save it to. Click ‘Export” to complete the process. Choose “Desktop” as the location to make is easier to locate the file after the exporting is complete.
Note that in some instances the Apple Pages word processor will be able to directly open a text file without further action. Some portions of the text formatting may appear different from the original version due to font differences, setting changes, or incompatible layouts or text settings. A pop up appears indicating what possible errors or formatting changes occurred during the process of opening the file in Pages.
