Your adoptive parents went to a lot of trouble to choose you and then raise you as though you were their own blood. That doesn’t mean you won’t get curious about your birth parents and begin to search for them. Your birth parents deserve to be given a lot of consideration when you begin that search though. Keep in mind everything they have done for you. Understand that while you are searching for your birth parents, your adoptive parents might have some fears. It is up to you to be considerate of their feelings during the search.
How to be considerate of adoptive parents during your search for your birth parents:
Fear of losing you- Your adoptive parents might have the fear that they are going to lose you to the birth parents. Even when their hearts know the real reasons you are searching, there is a deep down feeling that they could lose you. Be considerate of these feelings by simply reassuring them that they will never lose you.
Losing your Love- Your love is one of the most important things that you need to reassure your adoptive parents of when you are in search of your birth parents. Show them how much you love them by being sure that you don’t put the search for birth parents ahead of your adoptive parents. Make sure they know how much you appreciate all the things that they have done for you and the things they continue to do for you because of their love for you.
Including Adoptive Parents in the Search- Include your adoptive parents in the search for your birth parents. This is the most considerate thing to do when you are searching for birth parents. It allows your adoptive parents to feel a part of everything that you are doing. That might not sound like much to you, but it will mean the world to your adoptive parents.
Including Adoptive Parents in Meeting Birth Parents- When you go to meet your birth parents, ask your adoptive parents if they would like to go along with you. This will ease their minds and it is the considerate thing to do. Your adoptive parents may not want to go on the meeting with you, but you should invite them along in case they do.
You don’t have to make your adoptive parents feel as though they are left out of the process. They deserve to be treated with love and respect throughout your search for your birth parents and beyond. Don’t forget how much you appreciate the things that they have done for you. Include them and remind them of how much you love them. They can be a great help to you in finding your birth parents as well. Don’t be afraid to share this time with them.
