Every year across the globe there are an estimated 42 million abortions, which is roughly 115,000 a day. While few women start having intercourse immediately after having an abortion, some do, which raises some important questions…
How soon after an abortion can you become pregnant again?
Ovulation can occur within two weeks of an abortion. It is possible to become pregnant again as soon as ovulation resumes. Note that not yet having your period does not mean that ovulation has not resumed.
Is it safe to have sex immediately after an abortion?
Not entirely. The cervix remains open for a while after an abortion, which can dramatically increase the risk of infection. After an abortion, you should not have sex for at least one week, though four is more ideal and most doctors request you abstain from sexual intercourse until after your post-abortion check-up which is usually within two to four weeks after your procedure.
If you do choose to have sex soon after your abortion, a form of birth control is strongly recommended. You can find a rough overview of available methods here. Condoms and the birth control pill are among the simplest and most common forms of birth control today. Note that you can become pregnant while on birth control.
Is it dangerous to have multiple abortions?
As of 2006, nearly half of all women receiving abortions had already had at least one previous abortion. Whether or not multiple abortions causes later health issues is yet another issue experts are on the fence about. Some claim that as long as an abortion is done correctly, there are no long-term health risks regardless of how many abortions are done. Other studies strongly disagree showing that multiple abortions pose serious future reproductive risks which may include increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, ectopic pregnancies and possibly even fertility issues. Depression and an increased risk of reproductive health issues such as cancer are also suggested.
In summary, a woman may become pregnant immediately after an abortion if ovulation resumes. Sexual intercourse should not be resumed for 2-4 weeks to avoid the risk of infection and by 2-4 weeks post-abortion pregnancy is 100% possible. Birth control should be used to avoid another pregnancy.
