If I told you that religious zeal could be taken too far, would you think me ungodly? Consider this. Since Mel Gibson began speaking out on religious issues and proclaiming his faith, his personal and professional life have begun to disintegrate. Why is that? Is Mel Gibson’s new found religious passion hurting his relationships with others, particularly the women in his life. I think it is. And here’s how and why.
God is love. His love for us is endless. It is not possible to love God too much. It is not possible or us to love others too much. But it is possible to mistake religious obsession and moral rectitude with love for God. That’s Mel Gibson’s mistake. He obeys the letter of the law, maybe, but not the spirit. Mel tells Oksana about having no spiritual common ground with his wife Robyn (mother to seven of his children). Mel claims that this is why he left his wife, breaking the sacrament of marriage. Mel excuses any behavior he engages in as doing it in the name of God.
That kind of thinking leads to holy wars, jihads, crusades, capital punishment, NRA activism, witch trials and war in the name of God. A religious maniac, which is really a form of schizophrenia and narcissistic personality, believes that anything he does is acceptable because he is doing it in the name of God. It’s a form a megalomania also. And narcissism and megalomania couldn’t be farther from the gospel. Make no mistake. What people like Mel Gibson ‘preach’ has nothing to do with real Christianity or Catholicism. It’s a pastiche doctrine that exists only in their diseased minds.
Megalomania and religious mania goes beyond being a hypocrite. A hypocrite passes judgment on others for behavior he himself engages in. A megalomaniac thinks he is God. If I divorce my wife, it is right because ‘we have no spiritual common ground’. If I hit my second wife and call her foul names that is right because ‘she displeased me’. Also she ‘had it coming’ because she wore clothing I deem evil. Religious maniacs see only black and white. They write their own definitions of right and wrong. The rules never apply to them. And they are ruthless, vindictive and psychotic. Megalomaniacs live in a world in which only they exist. Other people exist only as objects.
Oksana Grigorieva tells Mel Gibson in the taped phone call heard hear, that he needs help. And he does. Of course, Mel blames Oksana, both for his abuse of her and for the break-up of his marriage. Mel Gibson’s emotional and mental condition is deteriorating. Mel’s gone beyond psychologically unstable. He’s borderline criminally insane.
