Has your doctor recommended taking Pilates or Yoga to help your Sciatic Nerve pain and you looked at him like he had nine heads? Don’t worry – he’s not crazy. Pilates is one of the best exercise programs for learning better posture and spinal alignment. Those Yoga stretches and the deep breathing can help keep your muscles flexible and healthy. Don’t be afraid of Pilates or Yoga. “Try it – you’ll like it.”
Here’s what Pilates is all about. Joseph Pilates designed his program to align your spine, and stretch all the muscles in your body in dynamic exercises that will restore your muscles to their normal health and vitality. Both Pilates and Yoga use deep breathing patterns that also help to circulate fresh, oxygenated blood to all of your muscles.
One caution I will share though, is that you check the certification of the Pilates instructor before you begin a class. I have seen some places offering Pilates classes that are taught by personal trainers who are not specifically certified in Pilates, therefore are not familiar with Joseph Pilates methods. If your instructor has been certified by a recognized certification program like Stott, The Body College or Pilates Method Alliance, then you can be assured that you’ll be receiving the program you need for relieving your Sciatic Nerve pain. Also, make sure you tell your instructor if an exercise is too difficult or is painful for you. A qualified instructor will know how to modify the exercises so that you can get the most out of them without adding to your pain. Rest assured, there are as many ways to complete these exercises as tea in China and everybody is different, so you may be able to one exercise the same way as the instructor, but may need a modification for another. Take care of your body – it’s the only one you have and enjoy your class!
When I began teaching Pilates, I noticed that many of the exercises were familiar to me and began researching their origins. I discovered that all of his mat exercises are based upon Yoga poses, however Pilates added his own spin to them all. He made them more dynamic with extra emphasis on spinal alignment. Many of my clients have been able to completely relieve their chronic neck and shoulder pain or back and leg pain through a 10 week session of Pilates classes.
Remember, You deserve to be pain free. The excruciating pain that comes with your Sciatica is no picnic, and to find relief and keep it away for good, you need to do at least one or two of your exercises every day.
Best of Health,
