The President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, said yesterday the Taliban in Afghanistan is winning and the west’s rhetoric is partially to blame. The same can be said for America’s extreme right-wing Christian conservatives who are so full of hatred against Muslims, any Muslim, that their rhetoric is strengthening Al-Qaeda and giving it even more ammunition to destroy America. In fact, I would go as far as to say, extreme right-wing Christian conservatives in America are destroying it, with their hatred, lies, racism and bigotry.
With news this week of extreme right-wing Christian conservatives fighting against the building of a mosque in New York and Ron Ramsey, Tennessee Lt. Governor calling Islam “a cult”, saying it likely doesn’t have the same protection under freedom of religion in America as Christianity does, how can extreme right-wing Christian conservatives not see what their hatred is doing? Add onto that the Christian church in Florida that’s planning on burning the Koran on 9/11 and you really have to wonder, when did these extreme right-wing Christians change from following what the bible actually says “Love they neighbor” to deciding America has “freedom under MY God” and nobody else’s?
As more extreme right-wing Christian bile and ignorance spews out into the world, Al-Qaeda becomes stronger. As so-called extreme right-wing ‘Christians’ in America burn the Koran, they give fuel to Al-Qaeda, who uses instances like this to recruit more Muslims to their ranks. And as extreme right-wing Christians talk about Islam being a “cult”, Al-Qaeda uses that hatred to strengthen its own hatred against Christianity.
I’m an atheist, yet I was brought up to understand violence begets violence and hate begets hate, and to treat everyone the same, regardless of their religion. As someone who doesn’t believe in any God, I still think Christians have the right to believe in theirs, just as Muslims do, Hindus do and Jews do. I don’t push my beliefs on anyone else and don’t attempt to tell people the religion they believe in is ‘wrong’ or a ‘cult’.
So, why, do so many extreme right-wing Christians in America force their beliefs on others and even attempt to have their country, one that’s supposed to have separation of church and state (but really doesn’t!), be run under THEIR version of Christianity? If most extreme right-wing Christians had their way, every Muslim would be kicked out of America and they would go back to living “God’s way”, but only THEIR God’s way, you understand?
Al-Qaeda, meanwhile, is having a field day. While it’s hard to muster up troops against a country that loves Muslims, supports Muslims and treats Muslims just like any other person in that country – with the same rights and the same respect – it’s incredibly easy to swell the ranks of Al-Qaeda when you’re fighting a country whose citizens are burning the Koran and saying 1.5 billion Muslims are members of a “cult” and not a religion.
On 9/11, Muslims did not attack America – extremist, crazy people did who were indoctrinated with a hatred of America. Yet 10 years later, I see another group of extremist, crazy people being indoctrinated with a hatred of Islam and that scares me even more. With more than 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, these so-called ‘Christians’ aren’t fighting a ‘just war’. Instead, they’re damaging America, a country they supposedly love, beyond all repair and they, along with every other American, will be the losers.
