The coming of fall each year brings the anticipations of cool, crisp weather and colorful Autumn leaves. It also brings the highly anticipated football season. Anyone who lives in Texas knows that Friday nights are all about high school football. High school football in Texas is more than a passion, it is a way of life, almost a religion. The love of football felt by Texans even inspired the popular NBC television show “Friday Night Lights.” In Houston, Texas one of the most talked about high school football teams are the champion Katy High School tigers.
This well known team located on the west side of Houston has a well deserved winning reputation. This high school football team has won an amazing six state championships, 12 region championships and 24 district championships. It is no surprise this 5A football team has produced three pro-football players that have we onto the NFL. They include Jorge Diaz of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Eric Heitmann of the San Francisco 49ers and Ryan Mouton with the Tennessee Titans. It is impossible to list all this high school football teams achievements over the years you can see them all here.
Katy High School is known by some as the school where Oscar winning actor Renee Zellweger graduated. But this high school football team has been what has really put this Texas school in the spotlight for years. This award winning team has made it to the playoffs every year since 1986, except for two times. They also advanced to the state’s final four teams nine times and won the championship four of those nine years. This football team takes this sport seriously, as is stressed by their coach. Gary Joseph, their head coach since 2003, has stated in an interview with the Houston press.com, “It’s not all right to be mediocre, it’s not all right to be average, they understand.”
The tigers football team not only has won a staggering number of championships and awards over the years, their extremely dedicated coach Gary Joseph has won some of his own. In 2008 was named the Houston Texans 5A coach of the year. It is easy to see how devoted to his team he is. The winning football team is very well-coached, and they are also extremely disciplined and dedicated. From all their hard work and heart they have earned all their team records, state records, players of the year and all-state players.
Always one of the most anticipated games of the season takes place on August 27th, at North Shore High School Stadium. Katy High School is ranked number one in the state, and North Shore High School is number four. But in the Houston area Katy High School is still ranked number one and North Shore High School is number two. The rivalry and competition between these teams garner lots of attention even being broadcast on local television stations. There is no way to predict exactly what is in store this season for the Katy High School tigers football team. But with their history, drive and dedication it is sure to be another exciting award winning football season.
Dedication: I would like to dedicate this article to Matthew Ryan Frazee, a 2001 graduate of Katy High School. He was a proud member of the 2000 Texas State Division II Champion Katy High School tiger football team. Sadly at the young age of 26 he lost his courageous battle against Leukemia in June of 2009. He is greatly missed by his family, friends and former classmates and teammates of Katy High School.
