When your stomach is upset break out the fresh lemons. Cut one in half and cut one of the halves into medium slices. Hand squeeze these slices, collecting the juice in a small bowl. The lemon juice on your fingertips and in the air surrounding you will provide instantaneous relief. Continue to take normal breaths inhaling the lemon fragrance as you decide what further action to take. This lemon aroma therapy works wonders with morning sickness during pregnancy. Oranges and limes will also work, however lemons seem to be the most effective.
Now with this step completed take a moment and try to diagnose the cause of the problem. Was this stomach distress brought on by something eaten, overeating, dehydration, stress, illness, constipation, physical activity or other causes? Knowing the source of the problem will help determine the best treatment. In any case suffering from a sick stomach almost always signifies that the acid content in the digestive system is too high and needs to be reduced.
If the source of the problem was food or illness induced, try eating one or two slices of dry toast or plain bread. A handful of regular saltine or unsalted crackers may also help. Any of these will help absorb excess acidity. Drinking 6-8 ounces of citrus flavored lemon – lime carbonated beverage may also help release indigestion.
If the cause of the stomach stress was over exertion, stretch out, lay down, breathe normally and sip some water.
In 5 minutes or so it should subside. Of course if you have damaged yourself, seek medical attention.
If the stomach distress is the result of dehydration, drink clear fluids. Distilled water is best. Fresh squeezed lemonade sweetened with honey is good. Some hot teas soothe stomach disorders. Chamomile, peppermint and ginger root are all good choices. Practice making homemade ginger root tea when you are well so it will be an easy to make remedy when needed. Slice 1/4 – 1/2 cup of fresh ginger root into 2 -4 cups of boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer 10 -15 minutes. Use honey as a sweetener and lemon if you like as a flavor aid. Do not use sugar or artificial sweetener as both cause acid production. Ginger has been used to calm an upset stomach for several centuries. Ginger root is easily found in the produce sections of most major grocery stores.
If the problem is constipation, hot honey sweetened clear liquids will usually provide the needed relief. My Cherokee grandmother always offered hot honey lemon water. The teas already mentioned will also work.
If stress brought on the sick stomach, aroma therapy is a successful treatment. The sliced lemon will help and the aromatic teas will also help. My German grandparents thought that soaking your feet in very warm water with 1/4 cup table mustard would aid in alleviating stress. There is no scientific back-up for this treatment. Having been taught this as a child and carrying it into adulthood, I can say, “It works !”
In dealing with indigestion remember that the body by nature is an acid producer. Keeping the alkalinity level balanced prevents most stomach upsets. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are natural neutralizers. Eating foods rich in these three minerals proves to be an effective indigestion preventative.
